Just back from New Orleans/ TSA agent /CPAP

Post by bayourest » Mon Sep 03, 2012 2:00 pm

Hello
I was in New Orleans all week visiting my father in an assisted living facility. As of last saturday, hurricane Isaac had been predicted to hit the west coast of FL, but overnight it changed course and headed for LA & MS gulf coast. I never expected to be there through a hurricane!!
While this hurricane was not of the magnitude of Katrina, there was a lot of damage and when I left yesterday half of the metropolitan area had no power.
But I am writing to describe an interesting encounter with a TSA agent when I went through security at New Orleans airport.
As usual I had my S9 out in the tray. The female agent said hey what's that? and I said its a cpap machine, and she immediately began to ask me if it helped me and if I used it and how could I stand all the blowing in my face etc. She has one but has never been able to acclimate to it. I said, it takes a while, and may take numerous masks, but you really need to try. I am so much better because of it....and I never could have made it without the folks on cpap.talk.com; so I was praising and recommending the forum to a TSA agent!!
She took that in and seemed pleased and amazed to learn of the forum. Hope she joins and we can help her.

I had a similar conversation with a TSA agent as I was being frisked in Detroit 2 years ago.

I will be flying out of New Orleans next week. I am glad to hear that they at least know what a CPAP is and that it is medical equipment. I will be more than happy to share my story with the TSA agent is asked.

Same here. I had a TSA agent remark how he hadn't seen a unit as sleek and modern looking as my S9 Autoset before. He said he was trying to get his insurance to allow him to get a new one, and asked whether I'd recommend it. These folks are generally polite and I treat them as I would want to be treated, even though I vigorously disagree that a warrantless search is permissible under the Constitution.

Maybe we should all print off cpaptalk.com "business cards" and stuff them in our CPAP carry bags. Or in our wallets.

Oh, Oh, OH! (missing Horshack already)
I need to print off a few for the folks at the DME-led cpap "support" meeting this month.

Well..at the rate obesity is climbing in the USA it won't be long before everyone will know what CPAP is They'll have them build in to the seating at airports...20 minute nap for $20. I see it coming!!!

"Resistance is futile." LOL

So, sorry you had to experience a hurricane during your visit. For those of us who live along the Gulf Coast, it's that time of year.
