If you can't get through at first, keep trying and eventually you will.

This is one time where the warning of a trojan on your machine is NOT a hyped up scheme to scare you into forking over money to some scammer. This is a real deal.

If that is true, why isn't our anti virus companies and M.S. not warning us. Jim

Probably two reasons. First, most everyone who faithfully has been using internet security software, and keeping it updated, has been protected and is in no danger. For example, Symantec released their first antivirus protection against the trojan Jan 18, 2007 and the latest update on March 31, 2012.

Second, the occurrences of infection are apparently quite low. Here's a quote from the article.
The U.S. has the most, about 85,000, federal authorities said. Other countries with more than 20,000 each include Italy, India, England and Germany. Smaller numbers are online in Spain, France, Canada, China and Mexico.
The problem is real, but very small.

No this is not very important.

This has become just another overblown media blitz.

If you dont fix it before July your internet lookups stops working, thats it.
Nothing more... Not the end of the world, your information will not be stolen.
You dont lose anything. You just can't surf the web or check your email.

Well, maybe for some that would feel like the end of the world.

May I recommend malwarebytes.
its a free application.
Download and install it from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org
Run it weekly.

Here's a link o the full story on CNBC. It does appear to be legit although you have to be careful of those exploiting this situation to direct you to a site that WILL install malware on your PC.

AND, many time the sites you are directed to check with are the source of the infection, that's how many of them are spread. If you don't know who you are dealing with sometimes it's better not to play. Jim

By running good anti-virus software and keeping security up to date, you can be pretty safe. Don't click on everything on the internet, one, you don't need it, and two, many things are out their to cause grief and cost you extra money, and pain.

Has anyone mentioned exactly how? the FBI plan to pull this event off? Do they have a switch? You mean all this time this stuff is being routed thru the bureau? What will they think of next?

btw - Gabe I wondered how to bring this malware to the attn. of this sleep deprived audience w/o causing a raucous. You have a knack.
Thank You

WARNING SPACE RANGERS!
The above URL is picked up by Malwarebytes Pro as wanting to modify your registry in an unknown manner; do NOT permit it to do so!

Again, if your antivirus/antimalware software is running in realtime, running a full scan with restart once a week and kept up to date, you will likely be protected. Just don't do a dumb thing and visit a website that may have been hacked or open a link that may conain the payload.

Have faith in your AV/AM software and use only reputable suppliers.

As IT Administrator for a large telecom firm I can assure you that your risk is infinitely HIGHER playing around looking to see if you are infected than it is by simply protecting yourself... using the common sense rules of AV/AM.

CAUTION WILL ROBINSON. THERE IS DANGER AHEAD!

I may be dating myself, but after 30 years of this (acutally more like 40) I find that I have only had my servers infected once, which was cured by Malwarebytes and which was the result of someone with admin access doing dumb stuff.

The news guys make be doing their chicken little routine. My advice is to ignore them but always ALWAYS make sure you follow the rules of safe internet AND have solid AV/AM software involved.

Do not be a sheeple. Please. And can we now discontinue the virus warnings? They are banned on most every other website.

Not a switch, just a few temporarily installed computers working as domain name servers which they plan to disconnect from the Internet. Internet traffic from infected computers has indeed been being routed through them. I don't think they're inside the bureau though, just in some contractor's server farm building.

The only people who will lose internet connectivity are those whose computers are still infected with the DNS changer malware.
