Re: Tidal volume changes
My Tidal Volume chart in Sleepyhead shows some changes I don't understand. My normal Tidal Volume is now about 600, although that appears to be trending upward very slowly. Six months ago it was closer to 575. About a week after I posted the above, I insisted on seeing my primary care physician bec...

Re: What self talk have you used to keep mask on?
Hi Starlette. You probably won't have much luck lying there trying to subdue your subconscious by brute force willpower. Perhaps you could try the whole newbie "de-sensitize the subconscious" routine. Wear the mask around the house during the day for a bit. At night, when you first wake up and notic...

Re: CPAp psychology
Hi Treen. Welcome to the forum and congratulations on getting diagnosed and what sounds a successful start to CPAP therapy. I can't help you with the psychology. I only very rarely think about things I could have done better in the past. Nothing I can do about them now, and not getting diagnosed wit...

Re: Calculating Unintentional Leaks (Calling all maths geeks :)
I got a set of baseline data points by finding the tenth quantile of the leak rate for each pressure with at least 100 total observations. I fitted both a simple linear model and a quadratic model to the data. The simple linear model was okay, but the y intercept (leak rate at 0 pressure) was well a...

Re: Second night and woke up feeling stoned
Yes - it is called "sleep debt" Your body is finally getting real sleep and it wants MORE to make up for the years of abuse. DON'T STOP!!! Keep the machine on and reduce some of your activities until your body adjusts. Do some exercise when you get up to get the blood moving. But don't stop using i...

Re: Can CPAP help astigmatism?
I was noticing it shortly before I went back on CPAP, and I think it's not been as bad lately. I was attributing it more to the drop in my blood pressure that's also occurred (partly due to CPAP, partly due to diet and exercise, partly due to medication).

Re: Headache starts an hour after waking up
I have a friend who gets a migraine after drinking one cup of coffee. Ouch. She never touches the stuff any more. She's also very sensitive to chocolate and most teas. I am predisposed to migraines if I drink coffee, but it's not like there's an immediate cause/effect. Still, since I went cold turke...

Re: Let's clear up some misinformation
If users decided to bypass insurance and buy their machines outright out of their own pockets I can promise you that every DME supplier would love it, and so would the insurance companies. I think I prefer the Australian model (at least when I was there): patient pays the provider, insurance reimbu...

Re: Calculating Unintentional Leaks (Calling all maths geeks :)
I think the intentional leak (L) rate should be a relatively simple smooth function of the pressure (x), so what you want to do is estimate that function. I have no idea what the form of that function is, but for argument's sake, assume it's a simple quadratic: L = ax^2 + bx. (Surely there's no cons...

Re: TSA regulations regarding flying with CPAP
I always ask if they'd like me to remove my CPAP from its bag. Many years ago I had a Resmed S6 and always had to remove it. More recently I travel with my S9 and rarely have to remove it. I also pack my prescription medicines, chin strap, and a pair of lady's tights in my CPAP bag. I wonder what th...

Re: OT: Dreaming about burping
Interesting what shows up in dreams. I've had two CPAP related dreams that I remember. The first I was having a sleepless night, but I did get to sleep long enough to have a dream about being sleepless all night. The second I was hiking in the mountains while wearing my CPAP machine. People were loo...

Re: Barrel cozy for Swift FX causing leaks
Well, I finally tried enlarging the holes in the cozy last night. (I wasn't ready for a potential sleepless night until now). I hacked off (I tried trimming, but couldn't come close to the neatness of the original) about 1-2 mm of material from around each of the pillow holes. The barrel cozy was mu...

Re: Canadian in Texas
You should have no problem at all getting a local doctor to write a new prescription. I just did that without showing any old documentation at all - she just took my word for it. I did too, although the doctor also did a quick physical exam of my throat and determined that I had the worst possible ...
