Face mask????

Post by longjohn13 » Wed Nov 14, 2018 2:56 pm

When I had my sleep test, they put a nasal pillow on me.
I found that to work okay.
I don't think I would like the full mask (nose/mouth) and I know I wouldn't like the mask
that has the 2 nasal inserts.

I was wondering if anyone uses the nasal pillow and your thoughts
Also, I have a mustache. Anyone else (nasal pillow)?

Thank you!

Probably half the people on this board use pillow masks...They wouldn't use them if they didn't like them. Personally...I don't like them!

It really is just a matter of preference. I prefer pillows masks for a couple reasons. When they are in place I feel no moving air. When I tried an over-the-nose mask, the end of my nose got uncomfortably cold. My sinuses don't like warm air, so it was a problem for me. The other reason is a mask sitting over the bridge of my nose blocked off my airway causing such discomfort I simply could not use it. Also got a deep pressure sore on the side of my nose. I just gave up on anything other than the pillows. Those who have found a good fitting nasal mask and have none of the above issues I'm sure don't feel the same aversion to any mask not pillows. Even with the pillows masks, I can't use just any of them. My slotted nares require pillows not fixed in a slanted position. Once we go beyond whether mouth breathing is at issue, mask style really is a personal choice directed by individual needs.

i use the p10 pillows. i'm a bearded fellow and way too lazy to cut off my beard. at first, i thought i'd have to. i was convinced i was a mouth breather. but i know use a cervical collar to keep my chin up and hair bands to keep my lips together.

it took a fair bit of time to get used to breathing through my nose but i finally made it work.

I used the nose pillows for about 14 years and loved it.... I would still be using them but my allergies got so bad I started mouth breathing and had to go back to a full face mask.......

Okay, I'm confused.

Nasal pillows ARE the masks that have the nasal "inserts" (actually they sit below the nostrils). Did they use a nasal PILLOW for your sleep study or did you have a nasal MASK that fit over the nose?
I use a full face mask in winter and a nasal mask in the summer. The FF is too hot in the summer and I mouth breathe a lot in the winter when I have sinus issues. The nasal pillows are uncomfortable for me at high pressures; I feel like I'm trying to breathe against hurricane strength winds. Otherwise I'd love to use pillows so that I could use my glasses for the few times I have to adjust my settings while the machine is turned on.

I suspect the terminology is confusing.
The word "pillow" is NOT the mask that most resembles a pillow.
That would be a cushion--as are most full face masks and the total face masks.
Cushions LOOK like pillows--the tiny volcano-looking doohickeys are CALLED pillows.
More confusion--thanks to the warped minds behind cpap.
