Health Savings Account (HSA) used to buy battery for CPAP?

Post by tonycog » Mon Feb 27, 2017 2:02 pm

I have purchased a battery & charger to run my Bi-PAP system during a power outage. Am I allowed to pay for these expenses from my HSA account? I have read through the IRS website rules for allowable expenses. I believe it is allowable but I am not sure. What do you know? Or think?

Thanks,
Tony

Check directly with the administrator or your HSA.
In the past, they have not all been identical.

I contend yes.
From my HSA website:
Batteries - Expenses paid for the purchase of batteries are reimbursable when they are used for the sole purpose of an item that is also covered. This would include, but not be limited to, batteries for blood pressure machines, wheelchairs, heart defibrillators, etc. Request for reimbursement should include a description of the item the batteries are purchased for.

I have bought a heated hose, mask, filters, and a cpap pillow, all from our sponsor. I think it is fine, but I never really looked into it

Most plans pay for anything that is tax deductible as a medical expense (without regard to the "threshold" test).
