What causes the extreme sleepiness n the afternoon.

Post by purple » Tue Nov 05, 2013 8:05 am

I know that I can have an afternoon nap of an 45 minutes up to two hours, and feel greatly refreshed. I am curious to what I am not getting at night that causes the need for the siesta.

It may just be your circadian rhythm is set up that way. According to my sleep doc, a lot of folks naturally hit a low in the Wake/Sleep cycle in the afternoon. And if you look at other cultures, naps (siestas) are much more commonly accepted as "normal" behavior than they are here in the states.

How much sleep do you get at night? When is bedtime? When is wake up time? When is the siesta?

Another thing that can aggravate the afternoon sleepiness is a large, carb-heavy lunch. So you might also want to think about what you eat for lunch and when you eat it.

How long has it been since anyone check the efficacy of your therapy. I see you have an older machine. Is. It data capable? Have you followed your AHI?
I would be looking into getting a newer auto, data capable machine like the S9 series or the equivalent Philips series 60.

I agree with RobySue, we need to now more about your sleep hygiene and sleep patterns.

What do you eat for lunch?

Back in the days I ate tons of carbs, my blood sugar would bottom out about 3 pm and all I'd want to do is sleep. On weekends that's what would happen, while at work I'd stuff my face to stay awake, usually with sugary junk that kept me crashing and burning until supper time.

Since reducing carbs, my energy stays up and no more afternoon sleepiness.

Hi Purple,
I agree with the above posts...all can cause afternoon drowsiness. But with known OSA, sub-optimal treatment should always be suspected first. I was also having that problem until it was discovered that my pressures were a little low. And surprisingly, an increase of only 1 cm was all I needed.
Good luck,
J
