When I read 'outdoorgirl's' topic re plastic fumes I wondered how safe is the re-use of a plastic bottle. (Distilled water for humidifier)
I buy a 5Liter bottle Distilled Water - pour some out in a 1Liter bottle (the same plastic bottle for 1½yrs) that I keep
for refilling my humidifier.
The number at the bottom of the 1Liter bottle is 4.
The clever people say that nos.2,4 & 5 should be safe - BUT I do not trust manufacturers - So, I am going
to buy glass bottles now. HOW DO YOU STORE YOUR DISTILLED WATER - PLASTIC OR GLASS

I use the cleanable h5i tray and I use tap water. Deionized distilled water is best kept in glass if your using a chemistry lab but since it came in a plastic bottle, leave it in that one.

gosh, in today's world, its really hard to know what IS and what ISN'T safe. I keep mine in the original plastic gallon jug. I have wanted to use glass, but I was afraid I would somehow contaminate the water it if I put it in something else. I guess I could boil the glass jar first??
I do worry about all the plastic we're using before we breath it all in..........the plastic jug for the distilled water, all the tubing, etc. If you have alot of concerns, I'd just transfer it to a sterilized glass container.

I keep it in the plastic bottle it came in and I buy 5 or 6 at a time. It stays in the container it was bottled in until you buy it and it could have been in the store for a year........so whats the big deal.

agreed, I think tap water is usually okay if you have a cleanable tray as you can scrub off any biofilm/bacteria. For a non machine cleanable humidifier I would definitely use distilled water as 1. there will be less bacteria and 2. bacteria can't grow as the water won't have any minerals/nutrients for such.

ResMed seems to agree (from their website):

"If you have a standard humidifier tub, it is recommended that you use distilled or deionized water. If you have a cleanable tub, tap water is fine for everyday use.
Do not use: bleach, alcohol, chlorine or ammonia-based solutions; moisturising, antibacterial or glycerine based soaps; and water softening and unapproved descaling agents."

I buy mine in the gallon jug from WalMart and it stays in that jug until empty. I also use it in car battery's.

Distilled water can get outdated. I had a bunch of gallon plastic jugs in top cupboard in laundry room for my ancient ResMed Sullivan Passover Humidifier. I got tired of that and just used tap water in it for years forgetting about the few gallons of distilled I still had. One day I found them and opened one thinking I'd put some in my steam iron. It smelled SO BAD. A very strong rotten odor. I was told it was from the plastic jug. I poured them all down the drain. Then somebody told me if I just let the jug sit open for a few hours the odor would so away. I'm sorry but I can't stomach the idea of breathing something that smelled like that a few hours before.

We stopped buying distilled water at Wal Mart when we had a dozen empties.
Now we pour the output of our home still into the same jugs.

What is the proof of that home still?

Cask!

Australia, the home of boxed wine also does it for water.

Comes in bigger containers, much less plastic and uses recycled cardboard. Much easier to carry and use (handy tap) and much better for the environment. Effectively still plastic though.

Personally,I'm not too worried by food grade plastic, but a recommendation I often see is to use stainless steel bottles if you want to regularly refill and use a bottle without worrying about plastics and broken glass.

I have two one liter stainless steel bottles.

One for drinking water. One for distilled water.

The trick is remembering which one is which....

I am worried about plastics. Even the non-bpa plastics are said to leach harmful compounds when heated or over time. And our CPAP systems are ALL plastic--it can't be helped!

My youngest daughter has early puberty ( though the doctors tell us 7 is not early anymore!). Late puberty runs in both sides of our family. We eat organic & pastured food. SO the only thing I can connect it to is possibly the plasict baby bottles we used (I could not nurse because of a medical condition).

I'm hoping to find a glass or stainless steel container big enough to hold a gallon of water and be easy to pour without taking up too much room. I've succeeded in eliminating many other plastics in the house (coffee maker might be next).

Oh my, Plastic!!! . . . here I go again . . .
I use my electric (plastic) kettle alot . . . not anymore from today onwards - will get a stainless steel kettle - TODAY ! and glass or stainless steel for my distilled water!

This is what GreenLiving says: . . .(and I will NOT phone any Manufacturer - I don't believe any of them!)
Bottom line: Manufacturers currently aren’t required to label BPA so there’s no way of knowing if it’s present in the plastics or cans you use. For now, the best way to reduce your exposure is to use stainless steel, glass or plastics labeled “BPA-free.” If you’re not sure about a product, recommends Jacob, call the manufacturer.
