Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
Hello everyone.
Long story short; I ordered a CMS50E pulse oximeter from Amazon because I want to see how my sleep apnea is. I opened the box, took everything out and played around with it for a bit. Then I didn't touch it for a few weeks.
I just started actually trying to use it overnight, but I can't get it to work with my computer. After reading this forum, it seems that I can only use the USB cable that came with it. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this before and managed to misplace the cable.
I've been contacting Contec about a replacement cable, but they haven't returned my e-mails or calls. Does anyone have an extra cable I could buy from your? Maybe if your unit works with any cable, mine will work with your cable?
Thanks

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
Is there any chance the cable is still lying around somewhere but you don't know which one it is? There is a label on mine, but I don't have it handy right now. Perhaps someone else can look on theirs and read the label.
I think my cable was white, and and had a little silver label with black letters on the cable near the computer end of the cable. Mine was a 50D+, but maybe the cable is the same.
If you take the cable, don't connect it to the oximeter, and plug it into a USB port, you may get two boop sounds when you plug it in and Windows may pop up a note about a "UART" or some such. If you get that sound or message, that's probably the right cable.

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
If you look closely the cable is the same as alot of phones especially Motorola and some samsungs. If your stuck take it along to your phone shop at have a look I'd be shocked if you didnt find one. If got my original one and another one from my phone and both work, hope this helps

Mine is gray with a UPC code wrapped around it underneath some fairly heavy plastic.

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
Archangle: it is possible that it is still around. I've been looking for it but so far I've been unable to find it.
Gazhacks: I don't know what happened to my cable, so I can't take it to a phone shop to find another one. If you wanted to take a picture of yours, that would be great. A little bit of googling told me I might be looking for a "Samsung Data Cable", but most of the ones I looked at online didn't have a mini-usb connector. I can keep looking.
Jonnybee: Thanks. Could you tell me what the numbers on the UPC code are?
Thanks guys. Sounds like I can order a cable from wherever online, so long as I can figure out what cable to order. If you have a UPC code or other identifying numbers on your cable, maybe you could give them to me or otherwise help me figure out what cable I need to order.

4. You have to use only the USB cable that came with the device as it has a chip in it. Failure here, means that nothing mentioned above have any chance of working. My Dads CMS60D (made for SpO2 Assistant) has the UART chip buildt into the device, so it uses a standard USB cable, but still, using the cable that came with the device is the right thing to do, just don't use a chipped cable from another device;-)
I don't know if the CMS50 has a chip in the cable or not. Somewhere else I read that the signal from the 50D+ is so simple the USB port doesn't recognize it. The chip in the cable converts it to something recognizable by the usb port and then the computer converts it back.

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
I have a 50F that uses the special mini USB. There are no specific markings on it. It's black and looks just like the one for my 50F.
You might check with Kevin at pulseoxstore.com.
Let us know if you find a replacement. I think I will be needing one pretty soon.

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
The cable for my 50D+ is grey. The USB end is wider than a regular USB so that you can't plug another USB in next to it.
The tag has HGP0014 Rev.A.O on the top
then the bar code
and SP003741108182000
on the bottom row.
On the hinge side of the oximeter are the following: 2010-07 SN J1071N3188

Bumping to say that I still haven't found a cable. I've been talking to Gazhacks by PM, but I'm now convinced that his works with standard USB cables.

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
There may be some confusion as to the difference between mini usb and micro usb.
These are not proprietary formats, but they are definitely different animals.
Below are two usb port examples. On the left is Mini B USB. On the right is Micro B USB.
Most smart phones now use Micro B USB.
Likewise, there are Mini A and Micro A USB.
Then there's USB 3.0...
If someone could confirm, perhaps with a photo of the end of their cable, whether the 50E uses the Mini B or Micro B, it's just a case of ordering one like it from Amazon.
Edit: This reviewer on Youtube says it's a mini usb adapter. (Probably Mini B.) Any confirmation?

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
I'm curious what happens when you plug it up with a standard usb mini cable?
Are you getting an error message? Or nothing?
I have never been able to get my 50H to work on any other cable.... until today. ?? I don't know.
Usually when I have trouble uploading with my 50H or 50F, it is resolved by changing the sequence.
You might try:
Disconnect all other usb devices, reboot, connect oximeter in menu mode, set to highlight upload, open spo2 review, click the "new session" magnifying glass, "new session" should be selected, click OK, should say "device connected, waiting for data", press & hold "upload", should say "recieving data..."

Re: Looking for a CMS50E USB Cable
Mine uses a Mini-USB B connector. Which is how I got myself into this mess; I saw the standard USB connector and assumed that it used a standard USB cable.
When I plug it in using Windows 7 64 bit it comes up with an error message that the device has malfunctioned or is not recognized by windows. When I plug it in on XP I get either nothing or a similar error message. I've tried installing every piece of software / driver that would seem appropriate, including version 6.1, 6.4, and 6.5 of the CP201x UART driver (which I believe is the driver for the chip in the cable, which I am missing).
