Test results interpretation

Post by cmoore » Fri Dec 07, 2012 11:51 am

I was tested and my new equipment is due to arrive next week.

In the meantime I've not had anyone interpret these numbers:
Any comments are welcome
I think Im considered "mild"

Respiratory Disturbance Index: 15.1

Apnea-Hypopnea Index: 13.2

Oxygen Saturation Sleep <90% 0.8

INTERPRETATION: - Moderate Obstructive Sleep pattern seen

In the absence of more detailed data, that's about all one can say. Your oxygen saturation is where the rubber meets the road. Anything over 90% is OK. It's natural for SPO2 to drop slightly during sleep. Ideally it should average around 95% or above, but it will dip now and then. AHI of 13.2 and RDI 0f 15.1 is pretty mild.

So what prompted you to have a sleep study done?

Its a long story but I was overweight then lost weight and had a machine about 10 yrs ago and no followup or anything. I hardly used it.
My sleep has always been poor and I was without any insurance for a while.
Health-wise things fell of the rails a bit. Neurological stuff and some heart arrhythmia's.

After the new re-test I was put on a new cpap machine and re-tested .... two things:
1. My score with new CPAP dropped to around 5 on CPAP and
2. for the 1st time in years I was not waking up in middle of the night.

---------Oxygen Saturation Sleep <90% 0.8 ------ <90 does not say much ...... and 0.8 ?

I would call the sleep lab and get a copy of your full report with condensed graphs for both PSG and titration. Those will give you more information about what happened when... Such as sleep stages, position, how low your O2 dropped and for how long...

So you have a new machine; full data, I hope.

All that means is for 0.8% of the time recorded your Oxygen levels went below 90%. Doesn't say how low though but I would assume with the other rather moderate numbers it probably didn't go far below 90%.

Rough example..if you had 300 minutes of recorded sleep time you spent 0.8 % of the time below 90% so only 2.4 minutes out of the 300 was with oxygen levels below 90 %...probably wasn't all in one chunk of time either. Most likely in a few groups of maybe 10 to 20 seconds.

Ok that's helpful. So you do have some health concerns. The drop to around 5 with CPAP is encouraging. There are lots of people here who are at that level and are doing quite well. There are others who would sell an appendage for a 5 AHI. All things considered lower is better. But not waking in the middle of the night is priceless.

Ask for a copy of your sleep study (it is YOURS, after all) so you can look it over and maybe glean some tips from the crowd here.

So what kind of machine did they give you?
