Re: Need advice for traveling to Mexico and Bali
I read lots of warnings about very violent gang killings in the Mexican border areas. Living in Texas, it's too close for comfort. I read about violent gang killings in Detroit, so watch out there in Texas! Have you even looked at a map to see how far San Miguel de Allende is from Matamoros or Juar...

Re: Pain in the ass patients more healthy?
pain in the ass patients are probably better treated if for no other reason than medical folks dislike dealing with them so give them what they want to get them off their backs. Getting what you want is not necessarily good treatment. Sometimes, perhaps more often than you might think, it's the wor...

Re: home sleep study not a medically necessary
My contention is that a physician should be allowed to diagnose based on observation alone, as far as those with a high probability of moderate to severe OSA. To be clear, we're allowed to diagnose based on dowsing rods or chicken entrails if we want to. Silliness aside, the main issue is that prac...

Re: home sleep study not a medically necessary
And a home study set-up uses a chest strap to determine respiratory effort...so it CAN differentiate between an obstructive apnea and a clear airway apnea. There are many sleep disorders besides breathing-related ones. most rural areas don't have a sleep lab available. I'm in a very rural area and ...

Re: home sleep study not a medically necessary
Doctors order lab tests and x-rays all the time to rule something out...and Medicare doesn't deny it. I order tests all day every day that I work, largely to rule things out. Medicare denies payment for tests all the time, particularly if ordered to rule something out. What this means in practice i...

Re: home sleep study not a medically necessary
This needs to be appealed by the physician's office. Be aware, though, that Medicare doesn't pay to rule anything out (!!), so wording is paramount. Home sleep studies are worth about what you see here - little to nothing - because they're limited in data channels and have to be confirmed with a lab...

Re: Let's clear up some misinformation
I have to say my own experience suggests that DME's are, in fact, actually expecting reimbursement far in excess of actual cost on flow generators. For my previous machine I spent ages dealing with my insurance company and DME trying to get the machine I wanted. Extracting the information from them ...

write "dispense as written" on the RX. Some points: 1) "Dispense as written" is the correct magic words only in certain jurisdictions. Others have different magic words, or magic checkboxes, or magic signature lines. In those other jurisdictions "dispense as written," even though everyone knows wha...

A minor side point - the reason they insist on a printout and can't open a pdf, accept e-mails or thumb drives is simple. They do not want to risk a computer virus. Then they should get good anti virus software. Or switch to Linux. It is not a valid excuse. It's an absolutely fantastic and complete...

The best they could do would be a ventilator in CPAP mode. A home CPAP machine is better for our purposes and no hospital keeps any sitting around.

Normal lungs can handle quite a lot of water and are pretty soggy all the time, anyway.

Re: you dont really need that humidifier
Atmospheric pressure is 1000 cmH20. 1 atmosphere is about 1033.23 cmH2O. Close enough. With CPAP at 20, there's only a 2 percent higher air pressure in terms of air density, turbulence, etc. The percent difference doesn't matter. It's enough to be quite noticeable, since the baseline pressure is no...
