Rant about spelling!
Rant about spelling!
Hi - I've stayed silent for years here not wanting to correct people, but it's driving me nuts, so will say it once now and forever be quiet in future...
The word "Artifact" refers to pieces of e.g. pottery, etc. dug up by archaeologists...
The word "Artefact" refers to 'junk' recording results on e.g. EEGs, or other similar testing machines and I believe it's the word you really want to use most of the time when referring to such results... but y'all use 'artifact' and I can't be silent any longer!

I believe artifact is the word used for years in my experience. Check out this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artifact_(error) In other dictionaries it may not be the first use of the word but it is there.

Re: Rant about spelling!
Although you are up North you have to remember that this is an American board.....in American dictionaries "Artifact" is the preferred spelling, both spellings are acceptable. In Eurpean dictionaries "Artefact" is preferred, however they also list "Artifact" as an acceptable spelling.
The word comes from the Latin "Arte" and "Factum"
In the U.S. You will always see it spelled "Artifact" ......you'll just have to get used to it

Just the interesting lingo of language development, or destruction depending upon your point of view.

So basically not English and I will wait for some ancient Roman to show up with their complaints of cultural appropriation and to correct the spelling.TangledHose wrote: The word comes from the Latin "Arte" and "Factum"

Re: Rant about spelling!
True and I just moved from a tab 2 to a note pro, it's even worse. If you spell it correctly and press return it will change the word to a misspelled one. JIMchunkyfrog wrote:I am irritated by blatant misspellings foisted on me by autocorrect.

I have a life threatening illness. I no longer care about other people's grammar and spelling. So much easier on the blood pressure....perspective.
