first airplane trip with machine

Post by lliann » Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:21 am

So, I never thought I would see the day when I would say that sentence.

But I have to fly this week (in and out of Boston). I don't fly often so I always get concerned about complying with all these new rules and regulations of what you can and can't bring.

I think it would behoove me (one of my favorites words) to consider taking my machine. (my dental appliance would be my other alternative and I get about 19 ahi out of it)

I have no idea how airports react to vpaps (plus I will have an ipad, a small scanner and a tape machine- doing genealogy research- newbie again). I don't even vaguely want to run the risk of having it taken away. Or if going through security or whatever can damage it. Not to mention more to carry.

So there it is. All my stupid worries. Experiences anyone?

Carry it on, my dear. Cpap does NOT count against your carry-on allowance.
Don't let it out of your sight. Baggage handlers work hard and fast; bad stuff happens.
Empty the tank, put everything in zipper bags to keep their grubby hands away,
and pack it in the carrying case it came with; along with mask(s), hose, power supply,
and an extension cord (just in case).
Others will come on with even more info.

I fly out of airports around Washington DC quite a bit lately. Never had an issue. I started off opening the case and telling the TSA agents it was a breathing machine. One of them finally told just leave it sipped up, they know what it is. Be sure you pack only PAP related items like was said before in this thread and you'll be good.

I always keep it with me and put it under the seat in front of me.

Been looking into the same thing myself since I'll be flying with mine for the first time mid-August.

I just flew in and out of Reagan National and ATL Hartsfield International was not asked to unpack my cpap bag. I placed the zipped bag in a bin by itself, it went thru the scanner and no questions asked, no swabbing, no inspections. I did not have any liquid packed. Just machine, mask and extension cord. I carried a copy of the TSA regulations just in case, but it was not needed this trip. Carried it on and no problems storing in overhead bin.

Someone broke the knob off on a flight. You might want to get some foam or bubble wrap or something and cut out a hole big enough for the knob.

Also make a checklist and keep it in your bag.

Get a zip log bag for the tank. There is always some water in it if you have to move pack in a hurry.

Was this during the flight or from careless handling of security staff?

[quote="-tim"]Someone broke the knob off on a flight. quote]

This is why my machine never leaves my side except to go under the seat. I've seen how people try to put bags waaay to big for the overhead, pound, push and slam to get it in, then jerk it all over trying to get it out. Do I have to say anything about baggage handlers?

Keep your CPAP with you at all times.

Mine is probably going in the overhead. But it's also going to be in one of these

Pelican cases are awesome. And if you choose a brilliant color, yellow or orange, and some jerk walks off with it, you can see them 100 yards down the corridor!
