I big thank you to all the vets out there, especially if you fought in a conflict. I was in during a time when things were heating up in the Gulf. There are three discharge certificates hanging on my little wall of fame. USN, USAF and USAFANG.

It's funny how things have changed. I was in uniform in 68 and a car drove by and the driver yelled out "Lifer Dog"---I got over it, but never forgot it.

Hi Bert....
USNavy vet here, I also live in Michigan.

I was an Airedale so not a black-shoe here. Spent most of my time TAD, great duty. The JFK was more comfortable than a destroyer... ha ha. One might say I lived my childhood dream, aerospace avionics, and loved it.

Tomorrow I am taking a break from my battles with the VA and hit Applebee's.

Thanks for starting this thread.........

I am not a vet, but I would like to express my respect and gratitude to everyone here who has ever, or is, served (serving) my country. My daddy is a Viet Nam vet. He has never talked much about it to me, but I know how the things he saw and did, and I can not even comprehend what he went through. I did come across a picture once, when I was a teenager. I won't tell the details, but it was a horrendous thing to see and even now, many years later, that image is stuck in my mind.

I'm so proud of him, and for each and every one of you on here who have risked your lives for families like mine. Please know that there are so many people who feel the same way I do.

Thanks, and I return the salute. I served in the Navy 4 years from 57 to 61. Mostly as a Tincan sailor in the Atlantic . We were permitted 30 days leave each year. When discharged I had 45 days of unused leave. Hardly ever saw shore. I look back now and sort of view it much like a prison sentence. Not, the prison would be better. The Destroyer was about 300 ft long and often about half under water. But we endured and completed what we had promised our country. Bless you all...Dan

I know that most of you, or all of you, went through your own type of hell. I get very emotional about this. I do know that my daddy had some positive experiences as well. If anyone would be interested in posting any of their experiences or stories, good or bad, I would love to read them. Or even message them to me if you don't want everyone to see. If nobody wants to, I understand. But maybe some of you would like to share with me or with everyone.

Well, I served in both WWII and the Korea War, with a total active duty time of 14 years, plus almost 5 years in the Reserves. In the process, on active duty I held every enlisted rank, Private through Master Sergeant, and officer's up through Major. A lot has changed in the military since I enlisted in 1944, most for the better.

Incidentally, for the past 15 years I've been a volunteer firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician. Being in the military was easier. <g>

So, tomorrow I tip my hat to my fellow comrades in arms.
