Re: another reason to use distilled water:brain-eating-amoeba
Don't worry! The ameba itself is very rare in home water systems. When it is present, it is usually found growing in the hot water heater. So even if you use tap water to fill your humidifier chamber, if you use cold water you're fine. Even if this ameba was in your humidifier tank, it would have to...

Re: another reason to use distilled water:brain-eating-amoeba
There's actually no documented risk of drinking water containing this ameba, just from getting it up your nose. The acid in your stomach kills it. Plus, the way that it infects your brain is by crawling directly through the membranes at the top of your nasal cavity and into your brain.

Re: Possible Insurance Fraud?
I'm not sure if it's insurance fraud or not, but it does happen sometimes. I had a therapist that I was seeing regularly. My insurance company changed their policies and I went from no copay to a $20/visit copay to see her. She said that she would accept the insurance payment as payment in full, and...

Re: gulping sound
This is rain out. The humidity in the air is getting deposited in the hose on the way to you. You can try turning the humidifier down a little. A hose cover will also help.

Re: Nasal Pillow Use
The Opus 360 pillows are shaped differently from the Swift pillows, as well. The Swift pillows sort of look like mushroom caps, with rounded tops. The Opus pillows are more volcano shaped. A little bit more of the tip goes up into your nose, and for me this means a lot less leaks than I was getting ...

Re: Ordering Through CPAP vs Insurance
Whether or not it's cheaper depends on your insurance. The DME does mark things up quite a bit, but then your insurance has a negotiated lower price, and you end up paying a percentage of that lower price. Usually, unless you have a high deductible or copay, it will be cheaper to go through your ins...

Re: Updating the firmware on the PR System One machines
Okay, that did it. Yay! And no, of course the DME did not provide me with any sort of manual or insert! Although, to be fair, the DME had absolutely no idea about the firmware upgrade to begin with. So I'm sure he assumed that I already had the manual (this was a replacement machine). Didn't realize...

Re: Updating the firmware on the PR System One machines
My new machine says version 2.51 on startup, and has the silent mode. But I can't seem to find the humidifier preheat setting? If it's there, do you know where I'd find it?

Re: Nasal Pillow Use
Some nasal pillows masks have the option of attaching the hose to the headgear so that it moves with you. I had problems with the Swift FX because every time I rolled over it would shift. I switched to the Opus 360 with the hose attached to the top of the headgear, and I love it. I believe the Swift...

Re: Explaining CPAP to kids
I'm not too worried about it. My best friend is the children's minister, and she'll be there too. So she'll be there to cover me. She's very good about explaining stuff to kids. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on the situation. Mostly about whether to wait until somebody asked, or just ...

Re: Detroit OSA Folks... study open for the brave
I half considered the idea. I did the initial online survey and qualified based on that. But I definitely have reservations about this being an experimental procedure. Plus, I'm 30 right now. No doubt it would need battery changes, replacements, etc. But none of those would be covered by insurance u...

Re: Dating and CPAP
I just told my guy about it on Saturday. My situation is kind of complicated, but his reaction was amusing. He's a widower (lost his wife 3 months ago to cancer), and we weren't really officially dating yet (just made that move yesterday!). I mentioned that I'd had a really frustrating week spending...

Explaining CPAP to kids
I've been using my machine since May, and there's no way I'd give it up, even for a night. In 2 weeks, I'm going to be a cabin leader at our church's winter camp. This means I'll be sleeping in the cabin with the kids. Not quite sure how to approach it with them. Keep in mind that these are not my o...

Re: HELP!!! I think the DME is lying to me again!
LTTS: I don't know where you got the idea that I browbeat the DME into giving me an unnecessary upgrade that they are going to have to pay for out of pocket... I walked in with a broken PRS1 Auto that was less than a year old, and I left with a new PRS1 Auto. Absolutely no upgrade involved, other th...

Re: HELP!!! I think the DME is lying to me again!
The other funny part is that the RT was kind enough to set the new machine to my prescribed CPAP pressure of 10. Which he did by setting it on Auto, min 10, max 10... No worries, though, I'll be changing that anyway, back down to 8.5.
