This is all still new to me...

Post by linnyts » Sat Jan 01, 2005 8:36 am

Hello, I have recently been through my sleep study, diagnosed with sleep apnea, and the night before last I had a second sleep study to try me out with a CPAP. I had a difficult time because I open my mouth too much when I sleep. The tech tried to put a chin strap on, but it made everything uncomfortable and I started feeling claustrophobic. Once the strap was removed I could not get the nasal mask to fit comfortably and I had to give up on the device around 2am. I don't know what my doctor will want me to do next.

Reading through the different posts I can see that there are is a wealth of experience here and quite a variety of equipment for me to consider. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated so that when I meet with my doctor I can ask appropriate questions or request specific types of equipment.

I can see that this forum will be very important to me as I deal with this new chapter... Thanks for your help!

hi linny,

Chin straps rarely work to stop treatment air from leaking out of the mouth. A full face mask is one solution. Despite the name, a full face mask doesn't cover the entire face, it covers only nose and mouth.

Are you able to breathe easily through your nose when you are lying down awake? Some people get so much sinus or nasal congestion after they lie down for awhile, it's just about impossible for them to breathe through their nose while sleeping. If I have a cold and nose is too stuffy, I use a ResMed Ultra Mirage FF (full face) mask, so I can mouth breathe easily through the night.

If you can breathe through your nose fine while sleeping, do a "search" (button at upper left of this page) for this: lip puff. You'll turn up posts explaining that trying to keep the jaw up with a chin strap won't solve anything if the real problem is that the tongue is not sealing things off inside to prevent air from puffing out even if the mouth is closed.

Good luck and keep asking questions - lots of people here can offer suggestions that might help you solve problems.
