Card Reader Club

Post by winken blinken and nod » Sat Jan 14, 2006 3:51 pm

OK folks,

for those of you trying to wrangle a card reader from 2factors, I have a thought.

I think I can successfully make an order. What was hanging me up was the "$30 limit". I expect that problem can be solved with the magic formula that includes ordering shipping as an item, but since so many people are struggling with this I thought I'd make this offer.

I am willing to collect requests and make a single order. I would have them delivered to me and then send them out to those in "the club" and be reimbursed by them.

Drawbacks are : might cost a bit more for postage and it would take longer for transit time since there would be two legs to the journey.

I have a PayPal account and would very much prefer if participants would be willing to handle the money part that way. Anyhow, it is a thought. Post or PM if you are interested. We'll do PMs to get the particulars together so folks won't have to publicly post private information.

I'd be looking at making the order on Tuesday or Wed to give people a chance to respond.

Oh, and I can understand if people might be concerned about my trustworthyness in terms of the money, etc. All I can offer is my good word and the fact that I am a long time ebayer (ophelias-ghost) and value integrity in online commerce.

Nice idea but it has at least two downfalls.

1. The produce would have to be reshipped at extra cost.

2. It would take twice as long for delivery, due to the doubly shipping.

3. Using paypal could result in a higher cost due to credit card use.

Saying this, Your hearts in the right place. It's the world that could use improvement.

Aisling,

I PM'd you but you haven't read it yet. If you see this first, try what someone suggested on the other thread and use the first link on the 2factors page, which is the one that includes the postage, which brings it over the $30 minimum, to $30.80. That is your solution. PM me if you need help so we don't clog up the thread.

I reread those posts too, and you're right. I'm going to go ahead and try that.

I'm going to go ahead and order mine on my own since it looks like that will work.

Thanks,

I don't remember what I did to get the pay pal acct, I have never used it for anything except 2factors.

I do not like the pay pal being in the middle of my doing business, but was forced to use them. Anyway using a CC I am safe from fraud, I think. Just posting this to warn others and see if I am not the only one, or if this is a pay pal scam, I did not reply to email.

Goofproof,

Do not reply to them in writing via return email, but I would strongly suggest you call PayPal and discuss this. I wouldn't presume it was a hoax or anything else. Their number for Customer Service is:

Customer Service Center

PayPal Customer Service Agents are available to help you during the following times:

4:00 AM PST to 10:00 PM PST Monday through Friday
6:00 AM PST to 8:00 PM PST on Saturday and Sunday

Call us at: 402-935-2050 (a U.S. telephone number)

We may only discuss an account with the account-holder. Please have the following information available when you call:
Your telephone number
Your email address
The last 4 digits of your credit card or bank account registered with PayPal
For security reasons, we must verify the above details before discussing any account-specific information.

They are the only way I like to do business online since they back you up, and have done so for me, in your transactions. They are great. Let us know how it turns out.

Goofproof (and others who may receive these e-mails),

That e-mail you received is a SCAM. Unscrupulous people are trying to get any kind of financial information out of you that they can. These folks try to scam Paypal and Ebay members all the time. Another recent one has been to send out e-mails asking you to verify bank account information.
DON'T fall for these scams. And don't reply to the e-mails, either. Then they'll know they've got a valid e-mail address and will bombard you with more spam and scams.

Best wishes,

This is a cybercrime technique called phishing.

PayPal will never ask you to give ANY sort of private information via email. It is also safest not to click on any link in such an email as the link destination is actually defined in the page code (which you can see by going to "view" and then "source" on the first bar under the title bar). You can put anything on the visible page, it doesn't have to match to actual link used by the code. These guys could be sending folks to a page of their own making that would look just like a PayPal page and might even have a page name that looked like a PayPal name, but be completely unassociated with PayPal. (I know this because I write HTML)

The safest thing to do when using PayPal is to type PayPal.com into the address bar and go . For ebay users, it is also safe to use the "pay now" button on the "my ebay" page as this is a secure link protected by your sign-in password.

If I received such an email I would call PayPal AND go to PayPal.com and look for the "contact us" and send them a copy of the mail.

Scams

Post by StillAnotherGuest » Sun Jan 15, 2006 7:37 pm

And if it's a real Paypal message, they will use your real name, i.e. Dear StillAnotherGuest, vs Dear Paypal Member or other generic greeting. The best thing to do if you suspect it's a scam is to forward the entire message to spoof@paypal.com where they will take care of it.
There is another scam going around that looks EXACTLY like a charge to your paypal account, but again, starts out as a "Dear Paypal Member".

SAG

PS- If that paypal link above goes to a spoof account, I would take it out of here if I were you.

I just put in in a hold inbox file, and I checked the CC for bogus entries(none ) the mail says that if I don't reply they will close the account, and that suits me fine. It is clear someone dropped the ball on security.

I had a CC that someone stoled info on a few thousand CC from a online store, they let 3 months and then tried to slip a false one on me, but I caught it. The cc company investigated and took it off my bill.

It is $30.80....$24 for the reader and $6.80 shipping. They do require you to use Paypal also.

Thanks for the info. I use Firefox, too, and was having the same problem.

IE allowed me to complete the order.

(Now all I have to do is run my anti-adware software to zap the junk IE collects. )
