Dizziness

Post by Mom8 » Fri Jan 13, 2006 1:36 pm

Does any one have trouble in bed when they roll over and being dizzy. About a month ago I went to the doctor when I was having trouble getting out of bed or my recliner and also in bed. They took a large piece of wax out of my ear. Slowly the dizziness has been going away. I had my arteries in my neck checked and their is no problem their.

Sounds like an equilibrium problem associiated with your ear. Haven't had that problem but had a boss who suffered from dizziness whenever he got a cold or sinus infection. Hope it goes away for you.

Inner ear problems do cause dizziness. Good luck.

Dizzy

I'm now having vertigo

Post by Dizzy » Mon Feb 27, 2006 10:25 pm

I am new to cpap therapy and have never had vertigo or dizzy spells until now. I have used the machine for about one month and then one morning I woke up and wow...the room was spinning! I noticed that I would get the vertigo effect if I turned over in bed...would last about 15 seconds and go away. If I stayed upright, then I wouldn't get dizzy. But if I lay down or turn over in bed, I would get the effect of the room spinning.

Since I never had this before I figured it was due to the cpap but haven't found much on this. I went to my ENT a week later and she said she didn't think it was related. She checked me out and didn't find an ear infection but she figured since it was getting a little better it would eventually just go away. It did in about 2 more weeks. During that time I went off the cpap treatment.

Well, I just did one night of the cpap and bam...I have vertigo again. To me it must be related but I don't hear many others complaining about this. I really want to see if this will eventually go away even if I continue cpap. If it doesn't is there another solution? I really want to use my cpap machine since during my sleep test, my apnea events went to zero with treatment. I also just spent $1200 purchasing new cpap equipment since I got tired of messing around with the DME.

Anyone else have vertigo when using cpap?

Dizzy, I have had symptoms as you describe, but unrelated to sleep apnea. Mine was caused by tightness in neck muscles creating a false sense of motion (so the doctor said). Theraputic massage cured the problem. Is it possible that your head gear might be crunching on some muscles and causing the problem?

I just figured out that was what was happening with me. It started in the shower when closing my eyes, I have to touch a wall at all times.

Funny you should mention it. I went to the doctor a week ago to complain about dizziness that had been bothering me for a day. I was bothered by vertigo sitting, standing or lying down. The doctor couldn't find anything wrong and suggested it would probably go away in a few days, which it pretty much has.

I'd been on CPAP therapy for over a month when this suddenly hit me. I've never had a problem with this before, so I was kind of concerned about what was going on. Hopefully it will continue to recede and not return. Maybe it was some sort of temporary inner ear problem. I continue to use my CPAP faithfully.

Dizzy

Something to think about.

Gidgie...thanks for the input. I have been working a ton lately so kind of stressed. Also lost a lot of weight due to the stress. Masks have been irritating to me at night so you could be correct about it pressing on certain muscles and causing the vertigo.

I am afraid to use cpap because the vertigo makes me want to call in sick and not go to work.

How long did you have to do the massage therapy before the dizziness went away?

LandKurt...

Thanks for your input. I don't feel crazy now! My ENT thinks I'm just complaining but vertigo is a scary thing when you've never had it before. I was rather alarmed when I first got it.

I still hate the feeling but I've stopped cpap for now. I'm waiting for a long weekend and I'll try it out again on the Friday night.

So you continued using cpap and then the vertigo still went away? How long did it take to totally stop?

I'm not ready to say it's gone, It only started eight days ago. It bothered me strongly for two days, then subsided. This was at the level of mild to moderate vertigo where the room would seem to spin slightly. I could walk fairly well, but was careful with my balance. I was careful about turning my head because that would cause a rush of dizziness. I haven't had any real problem with it since Thursday, but did notice it slightly last night.

The doctor's opinion was that sometimes people just get vertigo. If it didn't just go away in a couple days he'd want to refer me to a specialist. I'm hoping to chalk it up as a temporary problem, but I'm still waiting to make sure. As little help as the doctor was, he did at least check me over and rule out things like a heart attack or stroke.

My first thought when I realized I was unaccountably dizzy was that I could be suffering carbon monoxide poisoning. I checked that my wife was feeling OK and finally got around to installing the CO detector I'd purchased a couple months ago because we have a gas furnace.

Wow - that is exactly what I am experiencing. Room spins when I lie down or when I turn in bed. Ok once I'm up but feel a little off balance. Turning my head definitely causes the spins thus making me a little scared of driving. I wonder if your body just gets used to it and then it adjusts? I read somthing about BPPV type vertigo...this seemed to match the symptoms I was having but the ENT didn't think this is what I had...go figure.

I also thought of this too...I started thinking that it was due to my low setting on cpap. I might be misinterpreting what is printed but seems like if the pressure is too low, then you might be breathing air in that you're exhaling?

Let me know how the vertigo thing goes with you...hoping mine goes away too.

inner ear problems such as ear/sinus infections are the most likely cause or are you taking any medications for hypertension like DiovanHCT? If you just started on cpap, the pressure can force bacteria backwards up into the middle ear via the Eustachian tubes, your doctor should be able to quickly diagnose this.

As for any hypertension medication, depending on the type, it can cause you to become quickly dehydrated and also deplete potassium levels as well as carry adverse side effects like vertigo, drinking more water and taking a supplement potassium may help. If the medication is the cause, you may also notice vertigo when going from a sitting to a standing position, the reason is the large muscles in the legs take lots of blood to lift the body, this can rob blood supply to the brain and vertigo is the result.

you should ask your doctor about possibly trying a different type of medication, in the mean time, I'd be taking a 325mg aspirin or Ecotrin every day for a minimum of 10 days. On the more serious side, restricted blood flow to the cerebellum can also cause that.

I have had vertigo on and of for about 20 years. The worst bout was when I had it for 6 months straight. I have only been on my APAP since 4/05 so mine is not related to the therapy.

Idid seek treatment from and ENT and was eventually seen by a audiologist. He specialized in hearing but also vertigo related issues. He told me that everyone has "crytals" (for lack of a better word) in the viscus material in your inner ear. These small crystals and viscus material are very associated with your equalibrium. Some of us are just more prone to vertigo than others.

My doctor prescribe valium the first time, because it helps "cushion" the inner ear. It actually worked pretty well, and he was an old fashion GP. The ENT wanted me to try some other med's but I dont remember what they were.

Because mine comes and goes I have just accepted it. The one thing that really sets it off is being in an airplane and going around a clover leaf in a car of I am not driving. Anyway, the one thing that has helpped is to remember not to move my head around too quickly.

Hope that helps.
Teri

penny

Post by mom8 » Tue Feb 28, 2006 10:11 am

I was about ready to accept my dizziness but the other day I went on the computer and looked up vertigo under home remedies. It suggested to hold a penny in your hand when you got up from bed or chair. I have tried it and it works for me. My son-in-law said wearing copper bracelet would probably do the same thing. I didn't think I could loose anything by trying. Doctor said I would have to live with it after he did all the checking he could think of.

If i have my humidifier set on 2, I will get a plugged up ear and dizzyness - I've have sinus problems all my life and have to be careful. Perhaps it's as simple as lowering the setting on your humidifier.

Hope you get better.
