? Bout nasal interfaces for my father? What may be best?

Post by sapphireskye » Tue Jan 03, 2006 12:55 pm

HI, my mom called me this morning and told me my dad wants to start using his CPAP machine after liike 5- 6 years or so(not sure). I told her the machine was old, and he should look into getting a new one. I told her about this site. She said he just wants to use his machine that he never used, but she thought he needed a prescription to get a mask. I said I am not sure, but I know where you can buy anything you need for the CPAP without one. She said a guy at his work mentioned nasal pillows to him and he was woken up by a frightening event related to breathing the other day. So, now he wants to try cpap again. Maybe because I have been on it finally, who knows. My father had very severe apnea, which I do not. Which are the nasal interfaces that go up the nose, the ones that rest on the nose, and which are the masks? I have heard of prongs, pillows, and such. But if anyone could give me a breakdown that would be great. I could look through the site, but sometimes I cannot tell what a particular mask (except for the plain ol nasal mask), does. Thank you in advance
God bless
Chelle

Chelle,

First off I would suggest your father talk to his doctor about getting a sleep study done. Since he has had his machine for 5 or so years and never used it, plus he may have had other changes such as weight loss or gain, you don't know for sure if his pressure is correct.

Now as to masks, there are so many choices out there. It is a very individual decision. While one person may like one mask, another won't. Does your dad breath through his mouth, is he claustraphobic, etc.

My favorite mask by far is the Headrest (formerly Aura) by AEIOmed. It is a nasal pillow mask, so pillows butt up to the nostrils. It is very light and there are no straps across your face. This is a great interface for any sleeping position. I mainly sleep on my tummy and this is the first mask I found works best for this position.

I want my father to go for another sleep study, but I believe he will refuse. I may have to talk to him personally to see what he will do. My mom sounded like she didn't think that was going to be an option.

The aura is what I have read about extensively on this site, and that is something I wanted to mention to my mom. She is supposed to talk to me later on. I think I will give dad a call on his cell if he is busy then I will wait till he gets home.

So the aura doesn't have prongs then from what I assume. I am gonna have to really talk to him about this.

God bless you all
