Wireless modem

Post by Crayongrl » Wed Mar 02, 2011 5:59 pm

My DME guy came out tonight and attached a wireless modem to my machine. Now my doc can see what's on my machine just by logging onto an account and can make changes to it if needed. And I don't have to send in my data card to the DME company to show compliance. I lurve technology!

Anyone else have one of these?

Thats amazing, for the doc to be able to down load the data from his office and even possibly adjust your therapy accordingly ....

Why only needed for the first 30 days? Wouldn't it be useful for the doc to make changes past the initial 30 days?

There are some advantages and disadvantages to this. One possible disadvantage is if you can't see your data, only your doctor can. Is that the case? Did the modem take the place of an SD card? You could request that the DME email you downloads from the modem, and they might oblige. You won't be able to manipulate the data or the dates that you are looking at, though.

In my case it didn't appear to be for the Doctor's benefit. It was to save the DME from having to visit clients. They can make
some changes from the comfort of their office. In the 30 day period they were able to have proof for the Insurance Company,
that I used the equipment for 30 days and how many hours a day. I still had to bring my SD card to the DME so she could print the report for the Doctor and the insurance. If I remember correctly my DME was able to adjust the pressure with the remote unit.
The DME in my case was able to tell how long the machine was used and the ahi.

I don't get it.

CPAPs are supposed to be supplied only by Doctor's prescription. A prescription includes the pressure setting. How is it that a DME can change your pressure without getting authorization to do so from your Doctor? And why would a Doctor alter a prescription without first telling you that it was necessary?

For those who need to demonstrate compliance, then I might accept allowing the DME to download that info remotely. However, allowing a DME to alter my pressure remotely assumes a level of trust that I certainly don't have.
I'm workin' on it.

The DME would not change your settings without your doctor's prescription.

The modem didn't replace the SD card. I can still remove it and put it in my laptop and see all my stats. The DME company won't be doing any changes on my machine. The doc has access to the account and will do any changes needed - not the DME company.

I just think it's cool that I can email my doc and say "I'm having blah blah problem" and she can look at the information on my machine w/out me having to go in for an appointment - a time and $$ saver.

Our network docs have that capability - you can email them for small problems or to report things they've requested and they respond via email to let you know if they've called in a prescription or if they need you to come to the office, etc.

Is it really true that the doctor can make changes remotely to your CPAP by looking at the data uploaded by the modem?

I know you have an S9 but I don't have a clinical manual for it. For the new AirSense 10 this is what the clinical manual says about remote monitoring.
Remote monitoring
The AirSense 10 device has cellular communication which has the ability to automatically transmit
summary and night profile data on a regular basis. It also allows you to change settings remotely.
The Wireless signal strength icon displayed at the top right of the screen indicates the signal
strength. Advise the patient to check the signal strength on their device.
Notes:
 Therapy data might not be transmitted if used outside of the country or region of purchase.
 Devices with cellular communication might not be available in all regions.
