Beeping Respironics Remstar Pro C Flex +?

Post by Underdog » Wed Feb 09, 2011 4:23 pm

Twice this week I have been awaken by a beeping CPAP machine. Its a Respironics Remstar Pro C Flex + that I purchase new 6 months ago. After I'm awake enough to realize what is going on I reach over and press the top button and then it stops. I don't notice anything particulary out of the ordinary with how the CPAP is working. Perhaps there is something in the manual about this. Does anyone know why it would beep at 3:30 in the a.m.?

The machine has an alarm that sounds after 30 seconds of: you not breathing, mask being disconnected from hose, or a very large leak. The alarm can be diabled in the user menu if you like. I leave mine on because I'm always and forever knocking my hose off my mask in the night.

Thanks. This beep sounds different. I am familiar with the loud "beep, beep, been" sound that the CPAP makes when I take the mask off while leaving the machine on. This beep is different. It sounds like the beep that the machine makes when it confirms changes to your settings. These beeps are more muted (but still loud enough to wake me up) The strange thing is that I have been waking up every morning at 3:30 for a week now. I'm wondering if the machine has been beeping me awake and I either don't consciously hear it or as in the examples mentioned only hear a few of the beeps. This morning I recall waking, looking at the CPAP to investigate a problem and then falling back asleep until 5:30 a.m. which when I normally get out of bed. I suppose I should call the DME and inquire tomorrow.

It could be two things, if that model does not come with a modem, it may be that your smart card is not fully in. If the humidifier symbol is blinking when it beeps, your humidifier may have to be replaced. You can check the heating plate when you remove the humidfier to see it is warm.

What was the message on the lcd when you looked?
Underdog wrote:I suppose I should call the DME and inquire tomorrow.
DME will likely ask you to look at the lcd.

From another beeping thread...

That happened with one of our M Series backup machines and the LCD screen showed "Service Required". It would probably cost more to repair than it's worth now so we haven't bothered. We have another backup that works fine.

Now you have peaked my curiosity. I will have to make a note to see if a message appears when/if this happens again.
I have the large leak detention alarm turned off and I also have the humidifier turned off. I have a humidifier but just never felt the need to hook it up. So at least I can rule out those two. I can recall checking to see if the cpap was still pumping air before going back to sleep and in all cases the answer was "yes." I would need my reading glasses at night or a flashlight to get a good look at the LCD to see if it said anything. I will leave those near the bed tonight.

This is my second CPAP (same model) in 6 months. The first one was ordered returned by the sleep dr because I was not getting the same result at home as I was at the lab. Turned out there was nothing wrong with that first on. I only mention this because the replacement unit did not come with packaging and it had some stickers on it that the original did not. I don't think they would be allowed to swap out a reconditioned model for my "new" one.

D'oh....I guess I should have read your equipment Underdog. I would have realized it's a machine I know nothing about. I guess what made me think of the alarm is that you said the beeping stops when you press a button. I'm still using an Apap thats 2 generations older than your machine.

Those two possible solutions were at the top of my list too. The cpap does have the capacity to sound those alarms, I should have been clearer in my description.

I had that prob...i fixed it...turns out the humidifier was set on 5. I turned it down to one (and adjusted anything else I could a tad lower) and had a peaceful night sleeping.

If anyone goes on the other blogs, could you please post this..I wanted to tell more peeps that this works.

Which all in all likely means your machine is beginning to fail. That's how mine began. Well, it still works, but only without the humidifier. And a brand new humidifier didn't fix it ... the problem is on the blower side. Older PRS1's apparently are notorious for failing that way. If you're still in the warranty period, get it looked at. If not, well, mine is now my backup...

It was the smart card on mine...

Mine also makes a quick 3 beeping noise at random. Now it does it all the time. The only way to stop it is to remove the smart card. Is this a problem with the card or the unit it self. It seems to work just fine without the card, and doesnt beep at all.

It would help if people posting to this thread would list which specific MODEL of machine they have.
Respironics (and more currently Philips/Respironics) has used the model name "REMstar Pro" since about 2001.
Roughly about six generations of machines using various technologies and which may or may not collect meaningful "data".
The true "data" collection ( apnea, hypopnea, snores, etc. ) was only introduced in about 2005 with the "Pro 2" model.
The title of this thread seems to be collecting a conglomeration of problems from the various generations of machines.
I suspect the original poster was referring to the Philips/Resperonics System One Pro with C-Flex + which came out in 2010.
The "Smart Card" (blue with gold seal) was used up until the those machines came out (Legacy Series and M Series) and then when the System One models came out, the "SD" type of card was used.

So, depending on which type of data card is used and whether the user does or is capable of gathering data from the card will determine whether or how they can solve their problems. Some machines beeped and displayed various types of error messages in their LCD screens. If the machine beeps, look for error messages and determine what the problem really is. The error messages have been posted in the forum pages over the years, so some searches may help.
Each generation of machine has different types of error messages and they may mean different things.

The most logical "problem" is that the card is incorrectly inserted or may have become corrupted over the years. If removing and reinserting the card doesn't solve the problem, get a new card or leave it out if you don't use software to analyze the data.
