Where do old CPAP machines go to die?
Where do old CPAP machines go to die?
I noticed that thrift shops do not have CPAP machines. I am guessing that there is some Federal law against them selling them. But I'm curious, what does Goodwill, for instance, do with a donated CPAP machine? Do they destroy it? Or do them make it available to some organization that donates them here (in the US) or abroad?

Actually, sometime in the past (maybe a couple of years ago), there were some forum members who actually found some CPAP machines in some thrift shops.......cheap.......like about $20. But, those situations are rare and they're only supposed to be sold to someone with a prescription. Some have also been found in yard/garage sales and quite a few are still sold on Craigslist. Unfortunately, too many of them are sitting (unused) in closets and garages. If they're too old and/or worn out and parts are too expensive or no longer available to repair them, I suspect some of the owners keep them for sovereign antiques and keepsakes. After all, they spent many nights with them. I'm sure there are others that do end up in landfills.TooGroggy wrote:I noticed that thrift shops do not have CPAP machines. If you've got a Goodwill store in your vicinity, call them and ask.

Here they take donated machines (less than 5 years old) and refurbish them to be used by folks in need. This is one thing you can do with your old machine.

The oldest ones probably got to be sent to Oulu, Finland to be distributed to the patients.

Second Wind CPAP will take your donation and give it to the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA)
http://www.secondwindcpap.com/Selling_Used_CPAP.html
Check out the blurb at the bottom of the page. I sent them an old machine and got a letter from the ASAA. Pre-paid label for the shipping and UPS (I think) came to pick it up!
