I had SEVERE vertigo and was on cpap - the vertigo had nothing to do with the cpap. Vertigo is caused by the crystals in your ear(s) escaping from the labrynth of your ear. You need to go to an ENT that specializes in vertigo by treating you with the Eply's Maneuver. Do NOT do the one that is on U-tube - as it will NOT help you as much. You need to have an ENT who is specially trained in this maneuver. The day that he does the Eply's maneuver on you, you will need to sleep sitting up for 2 nights. Then thereafter he/she will give you a series of exercises to do at home 3 times a day to continue to put the crystals back into the labrynth in your ear. There are no drugs, no medications. The Eply's maneuver is a specialized positional exercise. And, most importantly, if done by a trained physician, it DEFINITELY works!

I live in NJ and can only recommend the doctor who treated me here, but I am sure that there are other ENT's who are trained in Eply's maneuver as well. Please, let me know how you make out.

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

In my case I had it several times in the last decade, long before starting CPAP.

About a month ago, I had a recurrence in one ear and went to see an audiologist (Ph.D.) who deals with the vestibular system rehab at a large neurology center in my home town. She took care of it within 15 min by maneuvering my head. And she did NOT give me any home work like the Epley's stuff. These days there are special goggles that the therapists use to see the eye movement b/c of the existence of those otolits in the inner ear.

The correct name of this pathology is Positional Vertigo, vs. height Vertigo. Actually, the medical term is BPPV.

BTW, It's self limiting = goes away in several days, in most cases.

Not many ENTs know how to deal with it.

Besides the Vertigo treatment I also underwent at this center a treatment for this :

very interesting stuff!

Please be careful about diagnosing symptoms. BPPV is pretty common and easily dealt with as Jersey Girl and avi123 have suggested. But, there are other, more serious and dangerous causes. I speak from experience, living for 5+ years with a very damaged vestibular system and very compromised balance. But I'm better off than my friend who's underlying cause was a fatal brain tumor.

See a doctor, please!

Sorensen, I agree with you. About 30 years ago I discussed with an acquaintance how I been "treating" my "slipped" lumbar disc. But it turned out that he had spinal cancer (a tumor). He was gone a few weeks afterwards. But assuming that someone has a benign "regular" BPPV (= "positional vertigo"), I have learned today that the way to find out about a specialist to treat it, is to check:
