Updating the firmware on the PR System One machines

Post by blakepro » Thu Jan 20, 2011 3:16 pm

So, I have discovered that it is possible to update the firmware on the PR 1 machines.

Why would you want to do this? Well, one reason is the expanded "classic" humidification options dont appear to be available on older firmwares. There may be other benefits or improvements, but the changes between firmware versions dont seem to be documented anywhere.

So, There are two pieces to this whole process.

1:There is a program called "PR System 1 Flash Upgrade Utility 1.0" that is used to upgrade PR1 devices to software version 1.24

2:There is some sort of cable that you need to connect your machine to the PC with. Its Respironics Part #1064749
I was hoping that the update would be done through the SD card itself, but NOPE, you need this part to do it.

This Part# 1064749 is where I'm currently hung up. Does anyone here have any ideas how I could buy that or at least get some information about what it is or what it looks like? Seems like it may be a "DME ONLY" part or something..

One thing I'm also curious about is how exactly it connects to the PR1. Does it plug into the humidifier port? The SD card slot? Who knows. Until I find one, we may never know.

Any ideas would be welcomed!

Thanks.

I found this - http://www.search.philips.com/search/se ... medical&o=

Not sure where you got the p/n but maybe start there?

Personally, I think it will be easier to pick up another machine with the update? Unless you can find a tech who is willing to help.
I do wish you well.

Thanks for the reply and link, Yeah, I checked that same search area too and it produces zero results. The part number came directly from an inquiry to respironics. They said that part is necessary to do the firmware update.

I have the program installed and working on my PC.. just need the cable. heh... So close, yet so far away.

Could a DME help out?

Updating firmware on these machines should not be something that is difficult to do. I update my firmware on all my electronic devices in my home, so this should be no different if Respironics does do periodic updates. The DME's probably do not know much about this though. It will be up to the individual owners of these machines to do their own leg work and find out whats what. I am very interested because firmware updates are usually a very good thing.

I'm sure you checked the provider's guide and users manual. I just did and found no reference to any data port besides the SD card slot. I even pried off the cover where the card reader is to see if there was something behind it. Nothing behind it. I wonder why there is even a removable cover there in the first place? Maybe there used to be a phone jack there in older models. If yours has a phone jack that could be used as a data port. I'm sure you also know that classic mode is only accessible through the provider's menu. I provided instructions in a humidifier post. I don't mean to insult, just covering the bases. I don't know anything about the older SW versions.

So where did you "discover" this information? How would you know if your machine needs the update, or if it already has it? How old is the firmware update? When was it released?

I agree firmware/software updates are both important and easy to do on home electronics. I'm not sure if the same is true of medical equipment. While I agree they are most likely useful, I don't know how "easy" they are. And you don't seem to give any firm information about this update. All you said is that it is possible. Of course it's possible. Does that mean there is an update available? Not necessarily.

You have to unplug the power then look at the LCD when you plug in the power again
Good Luck

Thanks, Gumby. Youse a neat kid! (((hugs)))

Sheesh! Respironics and their d*mn unplug and plug in "hang up". I wonder when they are gonna "grow up" and run w/the "big boys".

This loaner from my DME is v.1.24 and it still dumps data every once in a while. PR really does need some new and better software engineers.

I just checked w/my friend I had borrowed his PR S1 BPAP Auto from earlier last year. The version on that one was V.1.22.

It sounds like patients are paying for equipment to be the "beta testers" for the Respironics devices. *sigh*
