Where to get replacement REMstar power adapter? (traveling)

Hey all,

I'm on a trip to Las Vegas for the next several days, and I realized that I stupidly forgot to pack the power adapter for my CPAP machine.

My machine:

REMstar Plus M series [Respironics]
Label says it requires 12 V (4.16 A)

I'm in that place where it wouldn't make sense to order a replacement adapter (I doubt it'd get here in time), but I'd be happy to buy one locally, since I have pretty severe apnea and can instantly tell when I go off the machine (hypoxia headaches, exhaustion, the works).

Questions for the list:

- Is this power adapter something standard? Example: I could go into a local electronics store (like Fry's) and just buy one?
- If it's not, is there a medical supply store someone can recommend?

Couple of thoughts -
If you are staying at a hotel you could ask at the front desk for a lost and found. Maybe someone forgot theirs? Hope you remember what it looks like. Or you could ask for a local DME.

You could try at Fry's (or Radio Shack) you might be able to find a laptop power brick that will supply what you need. Bring your machine with you so you can get the right connector.

If all else fails, cpap.com can overnite it.

I doubt you have a car jump starter but if you do then you would need to get a cigarette lighter plug with wire and connector to fit the machine.

Hey Julie,

Calling cpap is the first thing I thought of -- but they're closed on Sundays, as are most of the DMEs. I'm only here till Tuesday, so I doubt even if I got hold of them they could really get it to me here by Monday. Thanks for the suggestion though -- and if cpap.com has a secret Sunday number, I'd love to know!

Since the Fry's option is basically my only option for a Sunday, is there anything special I need to know about the power brick? Someone mentioned DC converters and odd polarities, but I think this should Just Work if I match the voltage/amperage, right?

Then the key is to get the polarity right - for my M it needs a Positive tip.

It needs 12 volts with a center positive plug, you should get at least a 2 amp power supply.

I just left my power supply behind as well, can't believe I did it. Did the OP find a solution?

I don't know if the OP found a solution, but Radio Shack does carry a universal AC adapter in their stores that supplies up to 2.5 amps and up to 12V that may work. You would have to be sure to get the right tip and set it to the right polarity. Catalog #273-318 for $40:

Congrats, you are talking to a seven years old post, odd's are they have probably had two more machines since then. I'm sure they will reply with-in about another seven years. Jim

Just to clear things incase this comes up again - there were several references to 2 or 2.5 Amp 12V supply.

So an older cpap also and much will depend on what pressures the cpap will be used at esp. if/when using a battery.

I am thinking you need at least a 5A supply to start up the cpap for the start up surge then there can be things like a heated hose or humidifier (on the newer cpap esp.) that may require 12V @ 8A.

This is one of those cases where it is better to have more amps and not need them then to need more amps and not have them. Also keep in mind on the newer machines the plug connector has changed.

If you substitute the power supply and the cpap starts then shuts off that is a clue there are not enuff amps to sustain the operation even when the voltage is right.

Certainly, More AMP the better fire starter, faster and bigger the blaze, basically your post is crazy. the power supply needs to match the requirements, using a bigger one than needed is inefficient and can be dangerous because the machine may not be fused. Jim

Jim your are off on a tangent and prob off your meds yet again. you can't even show what you think is crazy. The M series mentioned by the OP clearly needs a 5A and the newer cpap need more cuz of the heated hose and humidifier. But until you get a newer cpap you won't know that now will you.
