before i head for my titration...

Post by sleepymama » Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:08 pm

i was wondering if i asked the sleep doctor to write the following on the prescription do you think i would still have trouble getting an auto cpap fully data capable machine? my prescript currently says cpap and 8. i was told that at an 8 i will not qualify for ontario help. not sure if my insurance will cover the full amount.

Data capable auto-pap machine with patient access to AHI, leaks and pressure data. Dispense as written. and then to give me a range for the numbers as long as it's above 10. maybe 8-12?

anyone know if this will work?

I don't know about that but would suggest that if you have to compromise, compromise on auto but never on data capable.

I hope you can get yourself an auto.. because you can run it both ways.

I have noticed that some nights I just cant handle a straight number, or even a higher starting pressure..

Im very thankful if Im having a rough time of it, I can dial down my pressure range.

If you have a history of allergies, or asthma, or lung difficulites, I think that would grease the wheels to getting you an auto, but I dont know
how it is in Canada.. but any doctor I think would see that you might need a little extra help if youre sensitive.. I dont know if you are, but if so,
use that.

Do you have any extenuating circumstances that you might mention that would justify an auto-cpap over straight cpap.

Say for example if you had some recent weight gain but were now dieting to take it off but that it will take several months to accomplish. (So your pressure needs are likely to change but don't want to go through a period of less than ideal therapy as well as the extra expense for all concerned of a new sleep study in a few months.) Or that your mate has noticed that you tend to have an easier time breathing (less non-breathing episodes) when you are on your side than when you are on your back, but that you can't maintain exclusive side sleeping due to pressure points on your hips which wake you.

These are the ones I've experienced, your mileage may vary.

i do suffer from seasonal allergies and my sleep study said i had poor nasal signal. not sure if that is cause i was congested. i wake up most mornings and feel congested.
i've never had an allergy test though. i'm wondering if after my titration tonight my level might go up since the 8 was a guess based on my first sleep study results. i will keep you posted. i'm so darn nervous. the anxiety is overwhelming but i know i must move past it.

well if you have allergies and congestion, YOU will want an autoset..

so many variables with your breathing with that going on..

Tell yourself you are going to get all the answers you wanted at your titration..

we will be thinking of you!

Hi,
Don't forget to write down what you want to ask.
Doctors are nortorious clock watchers once they get in with patients and they have their own agenda. You don't want him/her to get off topic and forget to ask something important, or not have time to remind them of something for the script etc.
Around here appts are either scheduled in 10 minute blocks for f/u appts (follow up) or 30 minutes for more complex appts. You can always call the office and ask how much time your appt is blocked for. At least that way you can get your thoughts together and not feel as rushed.
Hope it helps and keep us posted.
Shar:)
