Question About Sleep Usage For ResMed S9 Elite

Post by booboo123 » Fri Jul 02, 2010 6:39 pm

Hi all,

First off, just wanted to express how happy I am to have come across such a knowledgeable and helpful forum dedicated to CPAP. As a pretty healthy and fit 25 year-old, using a CPAP machine was the last thing I expected my doctor to prescribe to me after my sleep study, but this forum has helped me greatly through my initial stages of reluctance.

I currently use the ResMed S9 Elite with Humidifier and had a quick question about the sleep usage statistic under the info menu. From reading the forums, I have turned on 'Sleep Quality' and so after sleeping for 6 hours last night, I checked the Sleep Quality statistics last night:

Period: Last night
Usage: 5.2 hrs
Mask Fit: =)
AHI: 3.4

My main question is why my usage is only listed at 5.2 hrs, when I know I slept at least 6 hours (went to bed at 2 am, slept straight through the night and woke up at around 8:20 am). How is the usage time measured?

Also, I've read on the forum that my AHI number should be below 5, but can someone explain to me what the AHI number actually means?

Thanks for all your help in advance!

Apnea Index (AI) = number of apneas (breathing stops for at least 10 sec) per hour
Hypopnea Index (HI) = number of hypopneas (breathing reduced by at least 30% for at least 10 sec) per hour
Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) = AI + HI

Thank you very much for explaining AHI! So I guess my AHI number is ok then?

Also, anyone know why my usage is less than the time I was asleep?

Thanks again!

The do say that your AHI should be under 5.0,that is considered treated.

In relation to the number of hours used perhaps download your data and view it that way. If you don't have the s/w and instructions just post back and someone should assist.

I can think of a couple possibilities:

Might you have woken up in the middle of the night and been up for a while? If you sleep 3 hours, take your mask off for 2 minutes to use the bathroom or 30 minutes to have a snack and then put it back on and sleep 2 more, the S9 will add those 2 big chunks of time together for your usage - but it will leave out the time you were not using it in between.

I have discovered that, for me, I sometimes look at the clock and remember a time which is not quite the time I thought it was. What I mean is I might look at the clock and 1:17 am will stick in my head. Then I'll finish the page I was reading, let the dog out, go to the bathroom, get back in bed, settle in, put my mask on and lay down to sleep. So I think I went to bed at 1:17 am, but I really went to bed a bit later. Same thing with wake-up time - I'll wake up, push the mask off and lie there for a few minutes, then look at the clock. But the machine stopped counting when I pushed the mask off.

I have had a similar experience with the S9 - that I'm surprised by sleep time it shows. At first I didn't understand that it was adding together two separated chunks of time within the same day. Then I figured that out, but it still seemed like the results were odd - often it seemed shorter than I expected. But when I tracked it carefully it was accurate and I learned I was just sleeping less than I thought.

Thank you so much for the responses! Unfortunately, I'm still confused as to why my sleep usage is less than the hours I'm pretty sure I slept. For example, last night (my 2nd real night of use), I remember turning the machine on at around 12:10 am and putting the mask on to go to sleep and taking off the mask at 7:20 am to use the restroom. I didn't go back to sleep after that, so I looked at my sleep usage and was surprised to see:

Usage: 5.0 hrs
AHI 6.1

So my usage went down from the previous night (when I definitely slept less the previous night) and my AHI increased. What does all this mean? Am I using the machine correctly?

Thanks again for all your help and advice!

So after another night of sleep, I'm still pretty confused as to why my sleep usage is less than my actual hours slept. I know I slept at least 7.5 hours last night, but the machine this morning listed my usage as 4.5 hours. My AHI however dropped to 1.5.

What does all this mean?

Thanks again in advance!

Sounds very strange to me. I haven't seen that.

Do you have a "count up" timer? I have an inexpensive Polder timer I bought on Amazon which has a "count up" mode as well as the traditional "count down." If you have something like that you could try starting it when you start the machine.

Any history of other sleep disturbances like "sleepwalking?" I mean, if you somehow took the mask off in the middle of the night that time wouldn't be counted.

Otherwise, that's pretty weird. Will your doctor be looking at your sleep data from the card soon? That would give detailed information on what times the machine thinks it was on and working - start, stop, and lots of data in between. It actually records the specific minute it starts and stops. It also reports any interruptions in use. You could compare its exact info to your experience - just be sure to write down your sleep info for a few days before you next see your doctor.

(I think there's also a way to set the time and date, but that might be in the clinician menu.)

It's not unknown for the DME who set up your machine to have put the wrong time on it's clock. I believe the machine resets itself at "noon".

The only way you will be able to "compare" is with ResScan software which will give you times...

I'm not sure that you can point to a faulty report but...

I have found that... due to some firmware "skews" ... sometimes the reports by the S9 are incorrect.
Last night I had a leak Max reported as 45.7 on the Summary Data but when checking the Detailed data shows Max as 15.0... quite a difference.
Until ResMed fixes these "bugs" with new firmware... I'm afraid we have to deal with it.

I don't know that you are not see true time used. Check the time on the machine not used but actual and the time zone, when i first receice my S9 I had to set the time zone and time even after the DME had accomplished the setup. Just throwing and idea out there

Thank you guys so much for all the help! It turned out that the time was set incorrectly on my unit, so the machine kept resetting my sleep usage after noon each day. Anyways, everything is working now, with my last night's statistic as follows:

Usage: 7.9 hrs
AHI: 1.6

Thanks again for all the help!

My machine last night said I slept 1.1 hrs instead of the 6 that I actually slept. I don't get up at night no power outages!
