OT: Sharing our hobbies

Post by BlackSpinner » Mon Sep 02, 2013 9:41 am

John Fisher started a thread on his new painting skills. Rather then co-opting his thread let us start our own and keep it work safe.

Here is some of my work.

This is based on a photo of me with my youngest - water colour pencil and oil pastel

I have a blog too http://artdollsbylena.wordpress.com
and a website http://www.lena-arts.ca

Thank you Oak! And Elle!
I don't get much of a chance to get into the studio these days so the one new sculpture has been in the works for a year now. My mother needs to be watched like a hawk so the last few months it has been just knitting and some "painting".

I just took a peek at your blog and wow what talent. Going to go through it more slowly but wanted to mention that.

I see you moved from Montreal. Montreal is such a beautiful city. If I could tolerate weather extremes I would move back in that direction.

I looked at your website/blog a while back. You do magnificent work. I hope that someday you will get back to it the way you would like to.

I guess I'll play - While they're more like slightly above average snap shots I dabble in photography. Although the last few years I've only done vacation snapshots:

You got some great shots of the surf there. I nearly always miss those waves. I love the ocean, I can't breathe near it, but i love it.

I do photography, mostly animals. And since I go to a lot of cat shows, I also show my cats (previously in the household pet class, new pedigreed kitten arriving next month). I also compete them in agility, though my two 9 year old Ragdolls have yet to grace me with a completed course. Quinn has a personal best of 6 obstacles (out of 10). And if there are fewer than 10 cats with completed courses, then partial courses can get ribbons too. So, my two pathetic agility cats actually have ribbons in agility. I am hoping to have the first Ragdoll that completes the course. Quinn can do it, but she would rather rub every obstacle and then go wave at the people.

Avi your furniture is awesome.
My grandfather was a cabinet maker and we still have his tools in the basement. He specialized in yacht fittings and also made the first samples from the designers sketches as well as doing inlay work. We have nothing of his work however. The furniture he build for me as a teen was all built in - basically he finished my room in the basement like it was a yacht, the bed, desk, shelving were all built in - only the chair moved. Of course it all went with the house when it was sold.

ZooCrew that christmas photo is great but those cats look like they have it in for you. You must have immense patience to get those shots.

That was a fun shoot. All of the animals were there for the actual photo, but not at the same time. I set up the scene and the camera on a tripod, then work each animal one at a time. The hardest was actually the sable sheltie. She was my formerly abused and neglected dog, and she hated the camera. My nephew was standing by her feeding her treats to keep her cooperative. The cats were funny. Jay Jay, the large bluepoint is usually the difficult one as he hates photo sessions. But he kept trying to sniff the ball on the hat, and of course, it kept its distance as he tried to sniff it. He was focused on that for a good 20 minutes. The tabby was usually my best photo ham, but he didn't like that particular outfit. He does look a bit grumpy. This was my Christmas card several years ago.

This weekend, I will be working on some costume photos, most for holidays. I also want to get nice photos of Quinn and Jay Jay in the costumes I made a couple years ago. She was a Queen, and he was a knight. It was the only time that Jay Jay ever got a first place in anything
