Great practice! Dance...precisely that, mayhap an Argentine tango within between self and shadow...yes? Sometimes attraction, sometimes I will dance with you but I will not enjoy it in the endless war between yes and no, the dynamic tension our insistance on dualism creates with self surfing the turbulance swinging from one side to the other in the great circle we call life.

Thanks, -SWS.

I, like many others, have made the choice not to post my sentiments every time one of your posts strikes a chord in me or makes me laugh or teaches me something. But I watch for them and always enjoy them. When your fingers itch to make a post in any thread, you would be doing us all a disservice if you were to hold back, whether it is for education, comic releif, or personal insight. I'll try not to embarrass you by saying that "out loud" again in the future, but I figured I should say it once, just so you know.

Okay, I'm in a retrospective, philosophical mood....

There are many aspects of life that we can influence and exert control over. But to deal with those things that we cannot alter by choice or by will, we have to learn to let go. Life is best lived one day at a time, without regrets.

Regarding life and death, Kahlil Gibran wrote in his book "The Prophet":

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

I don't think it's "eccentric" to contemplate death and the meaning of life. It makes us fully appreciate the gift of each new day.

I am so grateful to have received the diagnosis of "sleep apnea" when I did. Of course, if I had been diagnosed and started CPAP therapy 15 years ago, then many subsequent health problems would have been prevented. But it is what it is. This is where I am, and I'm going to make the best of it going forward. There's hope that CPAP may give me a few more years I wouldn't otherwise have had. If I'm really lucky, some damage (to brain and body) can still be reversed. The renewed energy and mental clarity I have regained since starting CPAP are allowing me to live each day to the fullest and give of myself to others. I feel fully "awake" on all levels. What a blessing that we have this treatment option -- and this fabulous forum to support each other!

We're so glad you're here, secret agent girl. This is a "journey", that's for sure! And to everyone else, my eternal thanks....

Secret Agent Girl is well on her way toward existentialism. Her journey will be fully underway when she embraces the reality that the ONLY thing we can control is how we act and react to the world around us. Yet, through that miracle of perspective, we can change the world by purposefully guiding the world around us through those actions and reactions.

I can agree with the reality that you describe, except that we only have partial control of ourselves.

However, your "miracle of perspective" allowing us to "change the world by purposefully guiding the world around us through those actions and reactions" is just wishful thinking. Of course, one is entitled to believe that if one wants to. It is probably as good a philosophy of living as anything else, even though it would be equally valid for both good actions and bad actions.

That is - if we could define "good" and "bad".

The word existentialist can have so many meanings, and so many differing belief systems, that it can only be used with understanding between those who have a common definition of the word.

To get back to "living is controlled dying" my perspective would rather be that living is uncontrolled dying for most people on this planet, and quite possibly for all of us.

But I think there is one truism about philosophy that we can all agree on - debate and disagreement is a necessary part of philosophical discussion, and no matter how vigorously we disagree, we can always remain respectful. In the final analysis what we believe is usually conditioned by our life experience, which can colour our philosophical musings.

By the way, I sometimes take things too seriously, and I not infrequently get things wrong.

Ahhhh, secret agent boy obviously has secret agent girl exactly where he wants her: he has her believing that he is almost conviced that she is always right. Very sneaky of that shrewd secret agent boy!

Hi All

If Secret Agent Girl thinks she has Secret Agent Boy where she wants him ,and Secret Agent Boy thinks he has Secret Agent Girl where he wants her, then that sounds like very sound basis for a good relationship.

Sounds like a good philosophy to me

(As long as it remains secret)

cheers

Mars

PS I wonder if, like Secret Agent Girl, it would it be possible for me to take things too seriously,
...........and always be right ?

Sounds to me like we have the makings of the philosophy for a set of self-double-crossing double-agents.

BTW, one can only be always right during the times one isn't being too serious. They clash, you see.

Hi Secret Agent Girl

Does that mean I always get things wrong when I'm serious???

And do I get things wrong when I'm serious about being not being serious??

What about not being serious about not being serious? Does the double negative mean that I'm wrong....... or right?

I know..................... what if I just go away somewhere and quietly doze the day away.

Now that should please everybody

cheers
