The total cpap experience continues: Camping

Post by carbonman » Sun Jul 26, 2009 6:18 pm

Two years ago, I tried to do the camping trip that I did this weekend.
At that time I was still 9mths away from being diagnosed.
I was trying to force myself to do something fun, but it wasn't
because I was in my normal exhausted condition. We spent one night
and had to pack it up the next morning, because I could hardly function.
My wife drove home.

Fast forward, 1yr9mths. Same place.
....except, I brought a tried and trusted friend this time.

Image
It was much different. I was tired from my work day, but I wasn't exhausted.
It was interesting to adapt hose management while in a sleeping bag....but,
I figured it out and was very comfortable. I slept ok the first night.
The second night it was raining. As I settled in for the night, I had this amazing
feeling of self-reliance and security. We were warm and dry,
listening to the rain on the tent,
listening to rhythmic security of Grace, keeping me safe through the night.
I slept well and woke up refreshed.

Noise abatement provided by Resmed.
This setup worked very well. Very easy to setup and manipulate.

Cpap doesn't need to limit us in what we do and how we live.
Here is what I was rewarded with:

This was the view from our camp in Rocky Mountain National Park.
This is the southern end of the Mummy Range.

Carbonman,

Thanks for the inspiration and the pictures. I am contemplating spending a week on a sailboat this winter. Then it occurred to me "what about the CPAP?'. I know it will vary but, how long can you go on a battery charge?

Mark, I have used the Mseries for 4 nights and could probably have
gone atleast two more.
I don't have the inverter to run the Resmed system, yet.
If you have a generator, to recharge your battery,
on the sailboat, I would think you are good to go.
Have fun!

After it rains, the air smells of pine and wet granite.

It is simple and works very well.
Maybe I should market it,
call it the "Whisper Box".

carbonman, those are some great pictures there. The next time the Army has me sleeping in the woods, I'll see what I can do to get some pictures here in Germany.

Carbonman, those are great photos! I notice you have both the Autoset II and the M-Series Auto. I'm contemplating getting an APAP, and I'm wondering if you'd be so kind as to compare/contrast the two for me. Might help me make a decision.

Thx!

Ah Carbonman, very nice. I am fond of hiking in the mountains (and road biking also).

A little detective work and I now see your power supply.

How about posting a photo wearing your flannel PJs that match the hose cover.

...ah, those would have to be a custom order from PC(-aka Padacheek-aka Karen).

PS It's just a fantastic hose cozy.

Since you have taken up camping again, it is prudent to review this warning.

Any excuse to post that.

I think I've read every post on here about camping, but I have a ResMed, and I'm still confused.

There are two pieces of gear that are mentioned: the inverter and the battery pack.

Do you need both? Can you connect the inverter to a marine battery?

Confusion abounds...

Sleep well and live better!

This is where the Respironics stands out, you can run both the blower and HH from a 12v battery. It's made for easily confused people who want to camp

Sure seems that way, Gumby, but I have what I have. I know ResMed need Pure Sine Wave inverters, and there are a bunch online. Would I use a 12V or 24V inverter? I think I've seen people talk about marine batteries being used here, but seeing that I am not a sailor, I know nothing about them, how big they are or if they are 12V, 24V or both!

Sleep well and live better!

The ResMed S8 xPAPs have a jack for 12 DC input just above where the AC power cord connects. I'm pretty sure that the H4i can only be used when the xPAP is connected to AC power. The ResMed manual are not very clear about this and refer to the DC Power Pack instructions, which I do not have.
