dreaming, Clonazepam, what is my problem?

Post by deadtom » Sun Dec 12, 2004 7:33 pm

My doctor perscribed .5mg of Clonazepam for my restless legs. I told him that I am also experiencing heavy head banging, shoulder and hand seizures while trying to go to sleep. I am sure they are occurring while I am asleep also adding to my mild Apnea (9.5 an hour).
I am very upset because I have gotten to the point, within the last week, where my legs are so weak and I am so exhausted that I stay in bed most of the day.

I have taken it (.5mg Clonazepam)for almost 3 weeks and it has not done anything. In fact the seizures seem worse. I called and told his nurse this and

I have read online that sometimes this is given in quantities of .5, 1, and 1.5mg. I asked the nurse if increasing the dose would help and she said that the doctor only perscribes .5mg for these symptoms.

Does this seem right? I am a big man at 227 lbs. and 6'3" so it would seem a higher dose would work better or maybe a different medication.

One thing I am fairly sure off is that these seizures of my head and upper body are not related to a diagnoses of Restless legs Syndrome.
I read of a disorder called Rythmic Movement disorder that describes my seizures exactly and says they occur while falling asleep and into light sleep.

I also have, for several months, dreamt from the time I am falling aslep to the time I wake up. It seems that the dreams continues for hours with no breaks. I read that this is bad because the boddy never falls into the deep dreamless sleep.

It seems that only a mild case of Apnea (9.5 and hour) can be causing all this exhaustion.

Is the doctor wrong about the medication and what are these seizures from?

Help please. I am only 26, in school and at the end of my rope!

Hi Tom,

Hopefully some of the more experienced people on this list will give you the benefit of their sagacity, but I'll give it a try.

RLS, or PLMS can cause arousals much the same as OSA or Hypopnea. The reason you're feeling tired, is because you are probably never enjoying stage 3 and 4 (slow wave, or delta wave) sleep. Those stages of sleep are the most beneficial in terms of refreshing you.

There is no doubt in my mind that what you describe can be as disruptive to your sleep as a more severe case of OSA. The main difference, is that people with moderate to severe OSA run other health risks, and perhaps run them to a greater degree.

Rob
