Siix Corporation to develop sleep apnea device

Siix Corporation—a provider of electronic manufacturing services—has partnered with the Osaka Bioscience Institute Foundation to develop a simple device that measures and monitors sleep-related brain wave patterns.

The new device will help evaluate people, who are diagnosed with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.

Typically, this type of procedure requires a room full of equipment. With this device, the procedure is made compact and easy.

The new device is as big as a pack of cigarettes. It is fitted on the head. This will allow people to diagnose sleep disorders from the comfort of their home without spending too much on the medical bill.

Siix will work on miniaturizing the technology and hopes to commercialize the product by next spring. The current prototype measure brain waves, but the company says that it will add extra electrodes to allow it to measure electrical signals that are associated with muscle movement.

Can't come soon enough! Huge need. Wish we had oximeters that were smaller, communicated with our xPAPs, stored the data and then showed the O2 %s along with the events. These proposed devices should also communicate with our xPAPs or at the least should have software that allows users to read and save the results.

I will be an early adopter as well-- provided that the device does not need to be purchased through the health care system, or can only 'be read by an expert'.

You can find used EEG machines on EBAY and other places. It is tempting to invest in one.

Following another link that was on the righthand side of that page --
Curing sleep apnea takes more than just exercise and healthy dieting

I saw this statement at the end:
"Findings in a study conducted in Mayo Clinic (Portland, Oregon) indicated that a surgery called uvopalatopharyngoplasty is the most successful treatment for sleep apnea."

No way. No way is UPPP "the most successful treatment" for sleep apnea, or even the most successful "surgical" treatment for it. MMA/GA, yes; but UPPP (uvopalatopharyngoplasty) -- No Way. (Just my opinion, of course ... LOL! )

Since when is there a Mayo Clinic in Portland, OR. The only ones I know of are Rochester, MN; Jacksonville, FL and Scottsdale, AZ.

Dr. Steven Park makes a convincing argument that UPPP is more successful than CPAP:

One study that I recall showed that even the 40% success rate (of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) was better in the long term than CPAP. Patients were recruited from a VA hospital with newly diagnosed sleep apnea and two groups were followed: CPAP users and UPPP patients. What why found a few years later was that you had a higher chance of being alive if you underwent a UPPP than if you were assigned to the CPAP group. Even though the overall success rate for UPPP is only 40%, these 40% stayed "successful", at least for the first few years. CPAP users, on the other hand, probably began to drop off in using their CPAP machines, at after a few years, compliance was poor. Based on research that shows that your overall risk of dying from cardiovascular disease in much higher if your have untreated sleep apnea, these results make sense.

We tend to forget that cpaptalk members are a very select group with high compliance and years of perseverance. For the vast majority of those prescribed CPAP, the results are very different.

Eventually is right.
