No luck with Dr Sue's NB

Post by dsm » Wed Sep 14, 2005 4:37 pm

Have had the NB for a week now - here is my report.

1st night I tried it with my Mirage Ultra f/f - just didn't do anything & it was hurting my tongue to try & park it on the tongue platform. Had a bad nights sleep.

Next night I tried it with my Activa but ended up with a sore dry mouth as once again my tongue kept coming off the tongue ramp. A bad nights sleep.

The tongue ramp (the floor of the NB device) has a small V formed into it, presumably to allow the joining tissue under the tongue to have space. I slightly enlarged the V with a sharp blade but then had a rough edge.

I contacted Dr Sue who said use a dremel or mild heat to smooth the edges. I had thought a dremel would have no effect on such pliable material but I was wrong. At 37,000 rpm a burr tool or even a drill bit, shapes the material easily but one has to be very gentle as it is so easy to take a chunk out.

The mod did make it easier to park my tongue & suction did tend to hold it in place. After not using it for 2 nights I tried again last night and once again with my activa. As insurance for this 1st retry, I also taped my mouth shut as well (I always use a chinstrap too).

Well last night I was reminded that as soon as I go over 14cms with the activa I get Aerophagia and mouth pops.
If I use AUTO my wife complains of the flow generator noise and I usually feel I didn't get as good a nights therapy.

So last night was another poor night.

Dr Sue did say to me that the NB was a 'training device' to get me used to keeping my tongue on the roof of my mouth. But last night even when I was doing this, small bursts of air would get into my mouth because I had swallowed so much air I had removed one edge of the mouth tape to burp it out, this seemed to allow air pops to occur regularly even though I had my tongue in the right place.

It seems to me that I may just have a throat configuration that can't cope with pressures over 14 unless using a f/f mask. With my mirage I have been up to 17cms and it seemed ok.

So in summary. I may try using the NB during the daytime to see if I can 'train' my tongue. But my next experiment in the mouth sealing dept will be the modified F&P452 Oracle mask.

Cheers
