Using Wipes????

Post by lindas88 » Fri Sep 09, 2005 5:51 am

Maybe this is a stupid question, but does anyone know if it would be alright to use wipes on my mask? I thought it would be a good idea to just be able to wipe any oil that was on it, instead of taking it apart and washing it every day or two. More for a quick cleanup if I don't have time to wash it. Or is there certain ingredients in it that would harm the mask. The wipes are alcohol and latex free...anyone know the answer?

You say the wipe is alcohol free, so it should be OK, but without knowing the other ingredients this is only a good guess; don't hold me to it.

I keep a pump bottle of baby body wash and shampoo by the sink. I find I can wash, rinse and shake the water off my mask in such a short time that I can't imagine using a wipe would be faster. After shaking the excess water off, i just let it air dry through the day (I wash it first think in the morning).

I have been using baby wipes for six months and find them easy, and I assume cleans the mask well. If its good for a baby's bottom, I am sure it is ok for a mask and this ole ugly face.

Most wipes have some sort of fragrance or oil but if yours doesn't, I would think it should be okay for the occasional swipe. If you have a Mirage Swift mask, then clean up with good 'ole soap and water is really easy (easier than brushing teeth even)!

Really check the ingredients well. Don't get compulsive about cleaning it. Many fall into this trap. Most of us old timers NEVER take apart a mask to clean it. They last much longer if you don't. Just soak in vinegar and water occationally and dry.

Fatigue Fighter & rock and roll....I think I will just quickly wash the mask in the morning....I know it doesn't take long....and if I have a super busy day or forget I'll use a wipe. I find I get a much better seal if I clean the mask everyday and wash my face before bed...Thanks.

Rock and Roll,
So, it's okay to NOT wash the mask every day? I got my CPAP yesterday. The guy from DME didn't say anything about washing the mask. It's a gel mask, and I don't know how often I should do so. Your advice certainly beats washing it every day!

No you don't have too. The more you clean it the quicker you wear it out...within reason. If you have oily skin or you perspire a lot then you do need to clean this off but you can just wipe it down with vinegar and water. Some will disagree with me but...I have yet to have a mask wear out and this is what I do. I never take a mask apart even though the instructions say to, RG does not either unless she is rigging it with panty hose.

I do use pillows right now, Swift and Aura but I did this with the Activa as well. I do believe in cleaning oils off, but not cleaning it every night. IMHO

Barb,

The masks will last MUCH longer than three months if you take care of them. I have a friend who has used the same mask for five years.

I can't go six months without finding some NEW mask to try...although the one I've used for the last six is likely to be my only cause I'm in love (with the mask) ...and my wife of course.
Sincerely,
wading thru the muck of the sleep study/DME/Insurance money pit!
