How Many Hours and Nights Do You Use Your XPAP?
How Many Hours and Nights Do You Use Your XPAP?
My curious got up and got to wondering about XPAP compliance time of use so I did some Googling on it. About the best I got was from Uptodate.com Patient Info which said:
"COMPLIANCE WITH HOME USE — Six prospective, objective studies of patient compliance with home nasal CPAP report similar patterns of use [3-8]. Whether studied covertly or overtly, patients all reported nightly use for at least six hours per night, but were found to use the device only 5 ± 0.46 hours per night (range zero to 10 hours). In all studies, patient self-report of hours of use was not found to correlate with actual hours of use.
The patient reports suggest two different patterns of CPAP use. Although one study found that only 2 of 35 patients used nasal CPAP for seven hours or more (the reported sleep time) on at least 70 percent of the nights [4], further analysis of the data from that study showed a bimodal pattern of CPAP use [9]. The approximately 50 percent of subjects who did use CPAP, used it regularly, applying it more than 90 percent of nights, and averaging 6.2 hours of use. This contrasts with the intermittent users who displayed much more variable adherence to CPAP (applying the device 2 to 79 percent of days). The intermittent users averaged only 3.5 hours use on the nights CPAP was applied. Interestingly, the pattern of use, consistent versus intermittent, was established by the fourth day after initiation of therapy. Thus, patient self-report should not be considered an adequate method of determining CPAP use."
Most of the info I got was from last century (pre-2001 LOL) or up until about 2002.
Sooooo, what are our hours of usage/night and nights/week?? I use my 420e every night....and I mean every night plus for naps. I generally get between 6 and 9 hours of sleep per night and it's on every minute of every hour (and I can prove it from my software printouts! LOL). There have been maybe 3 nights in the past 8.5 months that I have removed my mask at night either knowingly or while sleeping.
According to the studies I've seen (including the one cited above), it looks like most folks use their XPAP between 3 and 6 hours per night and only on about 70% of the nights. The good news is that a couple of studies said that using XPAP for only 3 or 4 hours/night still provided bunches of relief!
Am I being too nosy??

I'm with you. Every single moment I sleep, the CPAP machine is going and the mask stays on. I have not missed a single night since I started, nor have I taken it off for so much as 5 minutes except for trips to the bathroom during the night. Other than that, it's on regardless. Maybe that's why I've gotten such great results from my therapy.

Since getting the equipment nearly 3 weeks ago I have used it for every minute of sleep (including a couple of daytime naps) with the following exceptions:
- 20 minutes one morning where I hadn't planned on falling back asleep
- snoozing on an airplane during my recent business trip
I've slept as little as 4 hours (I'd worked very late then had to get up early the next day) and as much as 9 hours.
I make it a habit to have the mask on and machine turned on if I'm in bed. No excuses!

Except for one night when I used a recording pulse oximeter to check what my sleeping SP02 level is without "cpap", I have never slept for one minute without putting on the mask and turning on the machine.
Every sleeping moment, naps included, I have it on...ever since the first night I began in October 2003.
I kinda' like the idea of breathing continuously all the time while I sleep. Odd notion, isn't it?

I have had my nasal (mirage) mask on every minute of every night except when it leaked to the point of frustration and I pulled it off and threw it on the floor! I am an attendant chauffeur part-time and I have to take at least a 15 minute power nap to be able to drive safely. I don't hook up for that sleep time. In 2 1/2 years of cpaping, I have only had a max sleep of six hours of sleep a couple of times. Usually its five or less. I am interested in finding out more about the certain pillow that I hear about in the forum, and also the new interface mask by respronics.

It's pretty much impossible to "lie" about how much I use mine, it logs the time
I average 7 hours per night most nights.

I am 100% Compliant, whether I'm sleeping at night, or taking a nap (which I do much less often than I used to) during the day.
I'm thinking about getting one of those machines with the built in battery so I can wear it when I go to the bathroom.
A great thng about CPAP is it's kind of like SCUBA gear. When it's too light in the room I can pull the covers over my head and be in the dark. I could never stand to have my air restricted like that before.
Since starting CPAP, I've been able to sleep longer than I used to. I usually sleep 7 1/2 to 8 hours now where it was hard for me to sleep over 6 hours BC. (Before CPAP)
You may have noticed I have this thing about acronyms? Retired military, it does that to you.

I wish I could say I was as compliant as all of you! Although I am getting there. I have been on APAP since 4/05 and am able to wear my mask most nights. I still wake up and take of my mask about 2-3 times a week. I am going in for my first "in office" sleep study next week per my doc, he would like to see if there are other issues. I have had 2 at home studies.
I average anywhere between 4-8 hours per night of "compliant" sleep. I was unable to use my APAP for 4 days due to a severe cold and boy did I feel the difference. No brain activity happening for me!

I agree with all replies. Although I sleep a varying amount of hours, if my head is going to hit my pillow, my mask is going to be strapped to my face and my machine will be pumping air.
