Holy buckwheat pillow..

Post by Eric_M » Sun Jun 28, 2009 4:50 pm

LOL I discovered two things this evening that I just had to share:

1. Buckwheat pillow... awesome for wearing the mask. Small and manueverable. Highly recommended.

2. I must have a chin strap. Since I switched to the liberty mirage hybrid style mask, i have had to kind of fold the chin strap over to make seal contact with my skin. If not done just right my jaw would drop and would leak. So I thought I would leave the chin strap in its normal working position and put the mask over it to see if it seals... seals like a champ... Im slowly but surely winning this war!

Once again... buckwheat pillow... highly recommended especially if a side sleeper.

thanks Eric,
I was looking into this type of pillow. I realize they've been around for a while but I'm a side sleeper as well and appreciate the advice.

There have been several posts on buckwheat pillows lately on the forum.

I use one and love it. Mine happens to be one of sleepguy's models, but others swear that their homemade ones do the job ( I tried and mine was not as comfortable as the Regensis).

Last night was my third night on the Regenesis pillow from Pursleep (sleepguy).
First two nights appeared as straight blue lines of un-interrupted sleep on my software Sunday.
Last night I made a BR trip but for #2!

It works so well for side sleeping, because even though it feels soft, you don't sink into the pillow so the pillow can't push up on the mask.

Highly recommend it.

Note I have been using Bret's (Sleepguy) pillow for a few months and the design is BETTER than the two other buckwheat hull pillows I own... I wasn't convinced but willing to try his NEW item ..................... .............. IT IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he already has his CHALLENGE filled with volunteers -but- here is a link:

Remember, those buckwheat hulls make a noticeable rustling sound if you move them so if you are sensitive to sound,be forewarned...(yes,I have tried buckwheat)

I currently have a microbead filled pillow but after many months of use,I still do not believe I have found the 'perfect' pillow.

Just had to laugh at this one reviewers impression of the microbead pillows:

"I keep watching the infomercial trying to figure out what went wrong. It certainly looks like that bowling ball is getting a good night's sleep. But I sure am not. This is like sleeping on a bag of cement! It's nice and squishy to hold; makes a decent teddy bear, but put any weight on it and it flattens into a hard, unyielding surface. I could get just as comfortable on a nice boulder"

and this review that speaks of an "orentation period"-for a pillow! ha ha:

"I bought this pillow after seeing it advertised on TV. The first few nights were a little strange, like sleeping on a padded rock...it felt really different. BUT, I haven't had a stiff neck since the very first night and will not sleep with any other pillow. It offers very good support of the neck. If you can just get through the orientation period, understanding that it will not feel like any pillow you have ever slept on, I think you will like it also. I am a side sleeper and I think the pillow is best suited for side sleepers and back sleepers"

I did have the "RUSTLING" sound in the regular Buckwheat pillow -BUT- the Regenesis pillow from Pursleep has walls that somehow eliminates or reduces that Problem..Image
I haven't tried a Micro beads?? OR even checked the $$$$ I just think Bret (SleepGuy) has Image Idea that really works.

Hope Image other users of the Regenesis Pillow JUMP in with their opinions..

I am trying one of SleepGuy's buckwheat pillows. 3 nights so far. Noise is not a factor for me. Between my fan and the machine, I don't hear the hulls moving. So far I will have to give it an A+. I had been using a wonder foam type of cervical pillow but the area for the neck support and dip for the head didn't quite conform to my neck and head size. With the buckwheat hulls I make my own cradle so I get just the right support for my cervical spine (lots of arthritis and a metal plate in it) and just the right hollowed out spot for my head. The ease in creating a hollowed out spot for the mask when I sleep on my side is just icing on the cake for me.

I have a little cat that usually sleeps with me but she has moved out since the hissing pillow showed up.
She thinks there is a cat inside a bag just waiting to get out and get her.
I sleep with ear plugs to negate all noise disturbances so the sound doesn't bother me.
It does exist though for sure.

Another factor is that the pillow seems quite small, but because of the density of the hulls, Bret says a BIG hull pillow will be too heavy to push around.
I have not been bothered by running out of room on the small (compared to my queen size regular) Regenesis pillow.

I've been sleeping on the Regenesis pillow for over a week now, and I have to say I absolutely love it. It's beautifully made, and the square, 4" quilted cover really helps the hulls to support the underside of my neck. I sleep on both sides and sometimes my back, and I don't have a problem with this pillow pushing the mask out of place. I also have a Chiroflow, which I filled with ~112oz. of water, and it still doesn't provide enough support under my neck. (The water goes to each side, leaving my neck without enough support.) Further, the Chiroflow gets hot with all the polyester in it, and the Regenesis stays comfortable, not too hot, not too cold.

If I'm careful when I side-sleep on the Chiroflow, it doesn't push the mask out of place. But ... the end of the pillow stays puffed up, and the CPAP exhaust hitting the pillow makes more noise than if I hold the edge of the pillow down. As a result, I find myself sleeping on the Regenesis every night, because it's comfortable, quiet, and provides the right amount of support without being hard. The only time I hear any hulls in it is when my head is resting on the pillow and one of the cats walks across the pillow above my head. Even then, I only notice it if I'm awake. Once I get up, one of my cats moves in and sleeps on the Regenesis most of the day! I may have to get a second one just for him!!

Before the Chiroflow and Regenesis pillows, I used two synthetic down pillows from Lands' End. I had the same CPAP exhaust noise issues with them, but they didn't provide enough support, even though they didn't get too hot. With the Regenesis, I can move around in my sleep and not wake up because of exhaust noise or the pillow pushing the mask out of place. Even though it's a small pillow and my others are queen size, I don't notice the pillow feeling small when I'm using it.
