Pillow question (not "nasal" pillows)

Post by BowlingJoe » Fri Jun 05, 2009 10:15 am

I've been using CPAP now for a little over a month with generally good results. However, I'm using a normal pillow when I sleep and it occasionally moves my nasal pillow mask around a bit causing small leaks to take place.

I know there are special CPAP pillows that can be bought and I'm considering doing that. I'd like to hear from others who are in the know. Are these pillows effective in insuring the mask stays on? And which brands/types would you recommend give the equipment that I have?

Thank you,

Joe

Well I purchased the CPAP pillow from a health supply store here. http://www.comfort-trac.com/cpappillow.htm this is mine but not where I bought it.
I like it ok, it is a lil low for me. I am considering putting material underneath it to lift it just a tad. You HAVE to sleep on the edge though because if you don't your mask will get hit. It works perfect with the nasal pillows and nasal masks. I really need to record myself sleeping to see if I fight with my pillow and mask LOL
Search PAPillow or cpap pillow and I am sure you will find links for more suggestions.
Good luck in your search!

I have not tried any of the cpcp pillows, but I have been using a memory foam contour pillow for about three years now. WHen I first started pap about 7 months ago I thought about getting a cpap pillow. However, after looking at it - it really looked like a contour pillow with notches in the ends. I thought about it and then looked at my Swify LT and thought - Why. There really isn;t that much difference (just the notches), and what difference there is looks like it is desinged more to accomodate a full nasal mask or a full face mask. As long as I don't turn my head to far in either direction the LT interface never touches the pillow. Any interference I get from the pillow is more with the headgear moving - and that would happen with the cpap pillows (at least I think it would).

So..... long winded simply to say - try a memory foam contour pillow. probably less expensive, easier to find, and can always be used as a pillow on a guest bed if you don;t like it.

Joe,

Here are several answers to your question. You can choose which is best for you.

(1) Take some masking tape and tape up the ends of your regular pillow to make it firm and hang you mask off the side.

(2) Some people swear by the memory foam pillow (Tempur-pedic).

(3) Buy a shapeable pillow from Target (about $25). It will hold the shape you mold it into.

(4) My favorite is the papillow.

.
I have both a Double Edge Papillow and two memory foam contour pillows (TempurPedic & Sealy Posturpedic Memory Foam pillows). I like them all.

Of the three, I like the Sealy Posturpedic Memory Foam pillow the best, because it's squishier than the Tempurpedic - and the contour works well for nasal pillow masks.

It seems to me that the various CPAP pillows are designed mainly for full-face masks, and the cutouts aren't really necessary for most nasal pillow masks, IMO.

I also have a PaPillow and like it very much for the side-sleeping I early-on trained myself to adhere to. Some folks find this pillow too firm. I think the firmness is why it is so effective in keeping my head at just the right height for comfortable side-sleeping, and the notches are in just the right places for me.

I also use a contour memory foam pillow I bought at Big Lots for $12.00. Comes in a box. It's wonderful and I strongly recommend it as the best buy in town. (They have a more expensive one, but I don't see why it would be necessary). Just perch the side of your face on the side edge of the pillow. Works great with either nasal pillows (my Swift LT) as well as FFM (I have an Ultra Mirage FFM for back-up). Some here have carved the thing with an electric carving knife, but I also have never seen a need to do so. Type "bed pillow" or similar into the Search box at the top of this page for a million or more suggestions on this subject.

I've been using the Papillow for a couple of years now. I Love this pillow. The mask just sorta hangs over the side. It gives great support and I even take it with me when I travel.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I've gotten enough favorable votes for the Papillow to justify trying it out so that's what I'll do. I'll post my thoughts here after I use it for a while.
