new to cpap therapy

Post by mikeyc96 » Mon May 25, 2009 7:55 pm

I have been sleeping with my cpap for 12 days and I seem not to get the relaxing sleep i got during my sleep study. My cpap is a fixed pressure machine and it is set at 12. That first night i slept at the sleep study the next morning I felt so good!! I have yet to duplicate that feeling at home, what could be the problem?

That's common with many people. After that first night, it seems to become a more gradual change. I didn't even get that first night, myself!

Even though I slept very poorly the first night, I believe I was amzingly rested that first morning. It seemed downhill after that for about three weeks or so and now it's getting better.

When we feel good the day after the titration study and not as wonderful at home, we need to remember that we are on our own. During the titration study we had someone continually tweaking things to try to optimize results. Plus the tech has the advantage of seeing immediately what one little change does to the results and can try to improve on it. We don't have that luxury at home.

I am actually doing better at home despite having some initial difficulties with the headgear. I had a lot of trouble getting to sleep at the sleep lab.

Don't be discouraged if you can't immediately do things that give the same results after the titration study. It will get better as you get more adept at mastering what we have to do on our own.

The xPAP portion of my split study was ok, and the first two nights when I started CPAP were good. But, then it seemed like I was struggling to achieve that good effect again.

I think its because I was so in need of sleep then, that I could sleep through anything....since then its been fiddling with mask issues, machine noise, rain out, aerophagia, gerd, congestion, etc. Though things are finally starting to feel better (though today is kind of rough, because I seem to be coming down with something...probably caught the bug going around at work....or it could just be the 'monday' effect, where I screw up my sleep cycle by sleeping in the night before.)
