Newbie - 4 nights in and all is well

Post by DaveAlan » Mon May 11, 2009 8:50 am

I received my CPAP unit last Thursday and will it is taking some getting use to it all appears well. The 1st 2 tonights were on the couch (current home due to "shake the house snoring"), 3rd night was "camping" on the screened in porch with my 6 yr son until the thunder bolts of lighting became too very, very frightening . Last night was the best however when my son invited me to sleep in his room, bottom bunk, because I no longer snored

I have snored all my adult life it seems and have been "chubby" most of that... the one time I did get fit for about 2 years I am told my snoring decreased to an acceptable level. While the snoring has interfered with marital bliss etc. it was the risk to my health as the single provider for my family that led me to get a sleep study and now get on a CPAP machine. My only complaint is that the end of my nose has some sensitivity I expect due to the pressure from the pillows otherwise the unit is quiet and easy to operate. No turning back now!

Sounds as though you are off to a great start. With that quiet machine and your snoring eliminated, maybe your wife will let you back in your own bed?

You have a great attitude! With 4 successful nights under your belt, now you need to repeat it for 8, then again for 16, then 32, etc......

Hopefully you are sleeping and feeling better in addition to reducing your snoring. I was a heavy snorer as well, and my wife thought I died in my sleep the first night I was on CPAP because I was so quiet.

If you want to check your nightly data, try pressing and holding the left and right buttons on your machine for a few seconds. If the words "Efficiency Menu" come up you can scroll down and read your nightly leak rate, pressure, AI, HI, and AHI. Lots of people track this info so they can correct or prevent problems with their therapy. The goal is to have an AHI below 5.0, and the lower the leak rate the better.

Some people use a lanolin cream or lotion, or a substance called Ayr Gel, on their nostrils/nares while they toughen up during the first weeks.

Keep up the good work!

It should just keep on getting better! Good for you to persist in this. alnhwrd mentioned you can use lanolin or Ayr gel to help with nose soreness. Also, the Swift LT doesn't require a lot of tightness to work. The seal at the nostrils is intended to inflate. It is possible you might be able to back your straps off just a tad. They shouldn't be loose, but don't need to be tight, either. If you received the full kit with three sizes of nasal pillows, you might also want to give another size a try. They started me out with a small, but the medium is more comfortable and leaks less, so that is what I use now.

Keep up the good work!

OUTASYNC, ALNHWRD and RIVERDREAMER - many thanks for your encouragement, it is all about getting better and having a supportive atmosphere! Thanks for the advice for the tender nose and also for the headsup on reading the unit. I am scheduled to send in the loaded data card next Monday to and was interested to know how I have been doing so your advise on accessing the Efficiency Menu is much appreciated.
