Eye protection

Post by bobkat13 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 10:24 am

I am <said with much modesty> a genius. Last night was my first try with a new FFM....
It's the Respironics ComfortFull2. It fit so well in the Drs. office that I could even talk with it on and produce no leaks. How some ever..............while lying on my side it seemed to me that, no matter how I pushed and noodged and adjusted it, that it was lying upon the inside corners of my eyes.

This was NOT at all comfortable! So, I made an executive decision. I reached into my nightstand drawer and pulled out one of those free, cheap, thin eyemasks that you get in Business Class while flying. I put it on under the mask. Problem solved. Comfort regained.....

We need more of these posts about how to solve a problem, when somebody has a success with an experiment.

I have been using this method for a few months and have posted here about this around that time. I am using nasal pillows, but around that time I was developing a dry eye condition, mostly triggered by some eye medication I was using, but compounded by small leaks hitting the eyes.

Did you put it OVER that little nose flap thingie on the eye mask? I would have thought that would make it leak more.

OutaSync, what exactly is the 'nose flap thingie'? I use the swiftLT, the eye mask goes over the nose just above the mask, almost touching it. To keep the eye mask snugly wrap over then nose bridge, I added a couple of thin soft pliable wires, masked taped over the bottom edge of the eye mask. Then you can bend and shape these thin wires, (just like the metal strips on most paper dust masks), to custom fit your nose and stay in place. Since the leaks from the nasal pillows are often parallel to the nose, without the above wires, the air would still go under the eye mask (eye shade) and might hit the eye, at least for me here.

On all my eye masks there is a bridge piece that goes over the nose between the eyes. That piece is in the way of my Activa and keeps it from laying flat and allowing the air blast to go underneath it. I can see how it would work with a Swift LT, but Bobcat13 has a nasal mask, and I was wondering if the eye mask went over or under the nasal mask.

I never thought about running a wire through it to shape it in place. Great idea!

To answer both of you: feeling_better, you are a generous soul! Here I went and bragged about my brilliant idea, and you'd already had the same idea several months ago. And yet you praise me for sharing a solution to a problem post!

Outasync: the little nasal bridge thingee on the cheap eye mask just keeps the ComfortFull2 full face mask that I'm trying out from irriting the inside corners of my eyes. I checked several times for leaks and didn't find any, so I think that the really thin material of the eyemask didn't break any seals. Oh, and the cheap eye mask goes on UNDER the full face CPAP mask.

Bev,
I have one that I can wear under masks... it's usually a really thin one. The thicker ones tend not to work with masks that have forehead supports... makes them leak too much!

Okay, I just tried it. It's not going to work for me. It would take another year to get used to having something over my eyes all night. Sigh...

Has anyone had eye surgery and had an eye shield. How doesthis work with a cpap mask?

Margi; it depends on the cpap mask. Some are compatible--some not so much.
Show your cpap mask to your eye doctor, and see how it works with the eye mask he plans to use.

I just had cataract surgery and I had no problem using the eye shield. I use the Quattro FF mask and put the shield on top of the mask
