I never saw this one coming.
Ive been incredibly compliant except for the nights when I take the mask off in my sleep. I cant help that one.
My husband left for the races in Bristol yesterday morning. Peace and quiet! I love it! I went to bed about 11, put my mask on and realized that I couldn't hear EVERYTHING that was going on in the house. I felt that I wouldnt hear a breakin, the smoke alarm, the dogs barking, etc. I got up and turned all the lights on, grabbed a dog and went back to bed. Still paranoid. I took a melatonin then got scared that Id sleep through a fire.
By that time I was so completely paranoid that I got up and fell asleep in a chair.
I realize that the machine isnt that loud but once that little seed is planted its hard to get it out of your brain. I never realized that I associated my husband with safety and peace of mind. It never bothered me before CPAP though!
I wanted to bring in our 150 lb Aussie with the attitude but I was afraid to go into the garage in the dark (which leads to the dog pen) so tonight Ill bring him in while its still daylight. Hes VERY quiet but he bites. My litte pug can do the barking for both of them when the boogie man tries to break in.
No kidding though, I don't know if I can wear my mask tonight, it makes me feel vulnerable.
I know. Weird.

Do you have a dog? If not you need to get one for when your hubby is out of town!

Funny, I feel the same way about wearing my mask, a little vulnerable, because you can't actually hear as well with the mask on. However, I'm always afraid I won't hear my elderly mother when she gets up in the middle of the night and needs my help, but somehow, I always do. I think we compensate in some way.

Absolutely. I can sleep through a roaring thunderstorm with huge claps of thunder, but when my kids were young if they called or cried, I'd wake up (with a fraction of the decibels...).Dormeus wrote:Funny, I feel the same way about wearing my mask, a little vulnerable, because you can't actually hear as well with the mask on. Lots of dogs but theyre all hunting dogs and they stink Not in MY bed!
Like I said, I have a nasty Aus Shepherd and a barky Pug who will join me tonite.
I agreee with you that Id hear my kids but I think it would be worrysome until it happened a few times.
Im a bit tired today (wonder why)but Im giving my granddaughter a crochet lesson so I'll have to prop my eyes open with something.
I think I'll have her sleep over. In my bed of course.
Re: I never saw this one coming.
If your granddaughter is very young and is unaware of cpap, you should plan to introduce her to it before bedtime!
The sound of that machine and grandmother , decked out like that may be frightening.

Re: I never saw this one coming.
I am always uneasy when my hubby is out of town and I have to spend the night alone but it doesn't matter whether or not I am using CPAP. The one thing that does give me some peace is that I have 6 chihuahuas and they live IN the house, so if someone is messing around a window or a door they are going to let me know about it in time for me to get the gun I hope!
If that fails and you walk out wearing your mask and run into an intruder it might scare the dickens out of him. Imagine me wearing full headgear, taped mouth, maybe a chin strap or maybe an eye mask, I go wandering out into the house and run into a would be burgler...I think the burgler would shreek! Then my pack of chihuahua would be on him like the HOUNDS OF HELL!

Re: I never saw this one coming.
I think any time we are used to having another person in the household and then have to sleep without them it feels odd. I've always (at the times I wasn't married) had either my daughters or roommates around, and every time there was a change, I went thru a few days of not being able to sleep well due to that sense of vulnerability in being alone in the house. Even when sounds change in the house it can matter. A good friend of mind had trouble sleeping when her not-so-dear hubby moved out. Said one thing was missing of the two things she needs to sleep at night - the whir of a fan and the hum of his cpap machine.
Sounds of danger are usually particularly loud, so it's doubtful your machine noise would drown them out, and even our sleeping brains are naturally attuned for sounds of danger. Hopefully you'll feel more secure tonight with the dogs keeping watch. I borrowed my daughter's dog once after a move so I wouldn't be so uneasy, but since the dog sounds at night weren't familiar, I just listened to him all night! But I felt safe.
Hope your hubby isn't gone too long.

Ive done that, she seems fine with it.(this one is eight) Kids seem to go with the flow. They like to play with it too but Im always afraid someone is gonna break something. My husband tells me to chill but those masks are pretty fragile and EXPENSIVE. Besides, I dont like the cat running around with my chin strap on. I get hair in my mouth.Hawthorne wrote:If your granddaughter is very young and is unaware of cpap, you should plan to introduce her to it before bedtime!

That's a FANTASTIC idea! It works both for monitoring loved ones and making sure you hear emergency noises. Only turn it on at night when no one will say anything private, since you are choosing to bug your own house and broadcast it over an easily scanned frequency, but they are cheap and very effective.Goofproof wrote:Set up a baby monitor! I hope you tell him that. Most guys like hearing stuff like that, whether we let on that we do or not.SleepyRose wrote:I never realized that I associated my husband with safety and peace of mind.

Re: I never saw this one coming.
I know exactly what you are going through! I too feel very vulnerable when my husband goes away on business, I do have a very yappy mini schnauzer, and when he barks to alert me I tell him to be quiet because he's scaring me! How dumb is that when I got him for that exact reason to alert me. I also have a 60 lb. PWD that is like trying to move a boulder so no one can get by her she'll just sit in front of the door and jump on whoever comes in. But really I put my nature sounds music on to drown out the machine hum and figure my chances of dying from NO AIR is greater than someone coming in to kill me!

SleepyRose...I would LOVE to see a picture of your 150 lb Aussie! We had one for 16 years, but I think she only topped out at 60 lb.
