2nd high point in County taken from 3rd high point, took 60 secs. to ride to top
Image
Ride by myself so couldn't hold bike over my head
Image
Next high point that way about 5 miles

Before

After, sure is flat around here

Seems funny how every high point is situated close to an interstate. I can only dream of the "majestic scenery" while I ride.

Hope you all enjoy the beautiful scenery of E. Central IL.

Blessings,

Fred

Fred, the important thing is....you're out there, on the road....do'n it.
You're hav'n fun, work'n w/what 'ya got and get'n fit.
Thanks for sharing.

A few years ago, someone from Minnesota was asking about how to train
for the TripleByPass in Colorado.
Their available "hills" were like your pics.
Someone suggested they ride back and forth over the overpass,
a few thousand times.....w/a plastic bag over their head..
to simulate altitude.

I'll see you on the road.

What is the difference between your low and high spots in your county? Here in Reno, the low spot is around 4,000 feet. The high spot is 10,776 feet.

Just checking the TOPO map, in my part of the county it's less than 50' across the county it would be less than 150'. I would say we avg about 690' above sea level. I've lived in this area now 42+ years and I still do not like the flat land.

Think I'll just stick with my routine on the flats and an occasional hill. Us all guys have hard enough time breathing w/o the bag simulation.

Well, my county has two very low points: the Democrat and Republican party local offices.

If you are talking about elevation, the river is about 700 feet and we have several little mountains with the two tallest topping out at about 1600 and 1700 feet. That's where I run and hike three times per week when the schedule allows.

While we are posting photos, Grandfather Mountain is just a couple of counties away from me. On October 1, I hiked the northwest slope and all four peaks on top and back to the start. According to the map it was about 10 miles and the altimeter watch showed 3900 feet accumulated ascent. Here are a few snapshots.

Your not to far off, I-57

Rooster, thanks for the pictures, I wish I was in a position to make Asheville (sp) NC my residence. Enjoyed NC for the 1.5 yrs. I was there. As a matter of fact got engaged on some beach out there.

Uh-oh. Hope she ain't readin' that!

Flat land has always looked very exotic to me, having spent most of my life in either hilly or built-up areas.

My favorite flat land song is by Grant-Lee Phillips, called "Far End of the Night." It starts out with the lines: "Buddy some Topeka night when it’s just you and the road/Seen no tailights there for miles and nothin’ much but static on the radio."

Sorry. It was just the first thing that popped into my head at the sight of the corn fields.

I don't know much about the flat land.
I've only lived in Colorado and Alaska.
I went back to Michigan a few times to see friends.
Did some bird hunting in eastern Colorado and Nebraska when I was a kid.

Always needed to be where I could see around me.
Always have enjoyed the higher ground.

Rooster, I'm guessing that those hills are alive w/color now.
Beautiful country.
Great pics. Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I will have to explore further into the music there.

Rooster,
I grew up very close to Grandfather Mountain. I clearly recall (with a little terror) being held over the edge of a place very similar to where you aired out your socks!!!!! The photos are beautiful.........I miss the mountain view, especially this time of the year. The best I have is a print of the mountains with Rhododendron in full bloom in the foreground..and several smaller mountain prints throughout my home.......Thanks for posting the pictures, feels like being home a few minutes!!!!

Well, I don't know which Topeka is being referred to, but we do have some hills in Topeka, KS. No mountains, but there are hills. They turn into mountains when I'm on my bicycle.

Pic from this afternoon's cold, cold soccer game. That's a hill in the background, isn't it? Menninger Hill, to be exact. I do agree that finding a decent radio station in this area can be difficult unless you like country. We do have lots of flat corn fields in the area that look just like Fred's pictures, too.

We had some flat land where I am from in Pike County, Kentucky, too--but it was underneath the river.
