New CPAP user saying Hi

Post by SidewinderZA » Fri Mar 27, 2009 3:44 am

Greetings,

I have in the last two week learned about sleep apnea as I have now been diagnosed with it.
It's amazing to see how many little hassles that I have been having are due to SA, I'm just glad I know the reason now

Last night was my second night on the CPAP machine and I must say I am feeling a lot less tired.
I guess it will take some time to become used to sleeping with a mask and then hopefully it will be onward and upward
The only hassle I have had is I think the mask was a bit tight as I feel a bit tender on my forehead and on the sides of my nose, or do you just get used to it over time?

I could go on and on with questions but I'll rather search the forums for my answers as that is after all the reason for this great site.

Well that's me for now, I'm sure I'll be bugging you guys every so often for help, suppose time will tell,

Cheers for now

I suppose ups and downs are going to happen, I felt a lot better yesterday than I do today, feeling really tired this afternoon.
Only my second day so I suppose I better be patient and just see how it develops.
The mask it a bit tricky to get used to, will take time to get the balance between being tight enough to not leak but not too tight that causes discomfort the next day.
The bridge of my nose it really tender today, any hints for a newbie so I don't battle on unnecessarily?

Cheers for now,

Stuart

When I started out, with a nasal pillows mask, my nostrils became very painful after about 3 days. I called my RT. She said: you'll have to stop for 3 nights, no sense in developing pressure sores, and your apnea isn't that dreadful. I stopped using the mask for a night or two - and have never had to do that again.

Call your RT/Doctor, ask them about the pain, and follow their advice. The tissues on our face are tender, and not used to have things touch them - certainly not for hours on end. Developing pressure sores may do more harm to you /your therapy in the long run than stopping for two days - however, don't decide to stop without consulting someone professional who knows what your body goes through without cpap.

Some people (not me) alternate masks to create varying pressure spots.
