I am so confused!!!!!

Post by BigDaddy12 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 7:40 pm

Ok, I finally figured out how to get into the clinician results on my machine. My machine is a ResMed S8 Elite 2. This might get a little long, but bear with me. Here are my results. I should add, that I have been using it for a little over a month.

Leak........... .12 for one week, and .22 for the month. There are no results for the day.

AHI............ 12.3 for the week, and 14.0 for the month. No results for the day.

AI............. .8 for the week, and 1.0 for the month. Nothing for the day.

HI............. 11.2 for the week, and 12.1 for the month. Nothing for the day.

Usage hours....00326 hours 0043/0043 week.... 8.29 hours Month...7.44 hours

Now for the questions,

1. Are those numbers good or bad?

2. Why do I have no results for th day? Do I have to check the results before I shut the machine off in the morning?

3. The readings for the week, and the month, are they averages, or what?

Well, I think that is all I have for now, thanks for any help you all can give.

Big Daddy,

FIRST, Please complete your profile in the EQUIPMENT section (drop-down boxes to choose from). We need to see your exact machine, mask, humidifier, and . . . do you have SOFTWARE?

Thanks,
Joy

BigDaddy,

Your leak is a little high which can skew your AHI numbers which are a little high also. You will need to work on leak control (like so many others of us). Go the the User Control Panel above and fill out your equipment information in text (not pictures) so that we know what mask, etc. you have. A Resmed user will have to tell you how to get your daily results.....you are citing weekly and monthly avg. Keep it up, you will get there, keep asking questions and reading here untill you do.

Ok, I thought of another question. There is a spot on my machine, where I can pick what mask I have. I have both the FlexiFit 407, and the Swift Pillows. Will it make a difference which one I have programmed? What I mean by this, is, If I have the machine set on the swift pillows, and I am actually using the FlexiFi 407, will this make a difference? Plus, the FlxiFit407, is not listed on the list, but they have a standard mask listed, is that what I should have it set on when I use that one?

It matters because the leak rate (among other things I believe) will be skewed. I don't have that machine, but as it has a program for matching up masks with the machine, I imagine that's at least part of what it's for.

ResMed machines are designed to automatically subtract the expected normal vent rate from your leak number, when you use a ResMed mask. It does that so it makes it easy to see what your actual leak rate is. When you use the Swift, choose "Swift" for your mask selection. When you use a non-ResMed mask, choose "Standard." But your selection changes nothing about your therapy. Your selection doesn't change anything at all about how the machine acts--it only helps you with the math for your leak.

To see your daily results, you have to check it before noon. At noon, the machine rolls your daily numbers over into the weekly.

The weekly and monthly numbers are averages.

As a general rule, if you get your AI below 1 on a ResMed, you are doing pretty well. That means you are averaging less than one apnea (breath stoppage) an hour. So I would consider your therapy successful, in that sense.

However, if you are a tweaker, someone who adjusts your own pressures for optimal treatment, you might eventually decide to try changing your pressures, eventually, to get the AHI (how many apneas plus how many hypopneas per hour) lower. If you have only been using the machine a month, though, you might wait a few more weeks before you think about that. You may be able to get AHI lower, or you may not, depending on how severe your obstructive sleep apnea is. If you are feeling better, that is a good sign. You seem to be doing particularly well in how many hours of mask-use time you are getting at night. If you are asleep most of that time, you are doing well.

That is only my opinion.

Others may have a different take.

Jeff provided an EXCELLENT summary.

Just one technical point: the weekly and monthly figures are not averages, but medians. From ResMed literature:

"All statistics calculated for a range of dates are median values. The median is the
middle value after the data have been sorted in order (50% of the values are
smaller and 50% are larger)."

The difference should be of no concern, unless you want to be concerned.
Again, in agreement with Jeff, from my perspective, you're doing quite well!

Thanks, Velbor. Good catch! I appreciate it.

In further support of Velbor's point, here is how Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate Dictionary explains the difference between "average" and "median":
"AVERAGE is exactly or approximately the quotient obtained by dividing the sum total of a set of figures by the number of figures . . . MEDIAN [is] the value that represents the point at which there are as many instances above as there are below <average of a group of persons earning 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10 dollars an hour is 6 dollars, whereas the median is 5 dollars>"
