Intro and Questions about Reader

Post by jabbered » Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:38 pm

I've had my CPAP for about 1 year now. Before I got my machine, I was exhausted, needing a nap midway through the day.

I wasn't impressed with the way I got it. I went to my primary care doctor, he referred me for a sleep study. Then back for a 2nd with a mask.

My first stats:

Apnea/hyponea index: 27 per hour
REM apnea/hypopnea index: 74 per hour

My machine was set-up with a 14. I've slept really well for the most part until recently. I seem to be tired more during the day again. My machine still says my AHI is averaging 0.4. My leak rate is around 38-39 for the most part. I was having a great deal of rainout so I purchased a cover. It's seemed to help that issue of waking up.

I don't have a reader or software and I was looking at purchasing. I've looked on CPAP.com and the bundle is nearly $200.

Do you think it would be worth it for me?

Is this price high? Are there lower prices out there?

Would insurance cover the reader/software? What about a flexible spending account?

Welcome to the forum!
I have software and card reader and feel everyone should have it. With the software and reader you can see just what's happening and when. There is no better way to figure out what needs to be done next. It's way better than guessing. It's well worth the money!
I have only read of one person that got insurance to cover the cost. If you find a better price out there...cpap.com price matches!

Hi Jabered,

From my experience the reader and software are a great tool to help you manage your sleep apnea and health. I was able to adjust my Apap Vantage elite to a lower initial setting and slightly higher setting by seeing what was going on each night and then incrementally optimizing the pressures accordingly. This meant the APAP pressure during most of my sleep times are low which makes my nasal passages feel better and is less strenuous using the apap. When an event does occur the APAP automatically ramps up to a levelwhere it can overcome the apnea quickly.
once the event has been averted the apap goes back to the lower setting. It is an easy to use interface and works well for me.
