A few questions

Post by Kedysh » Sun Jan 25, 2009 9:13 am

I am new here and love that I found this forum, it is great. I had a sleep study done back in 2001 and they said I had moderate sleep apnea, they recomended that I have my tonsils taken out as they were 4 times normal size, so I had the surgery and that was it. (they also correcteed a deveated septum) no follow up or anything. Recently ny new PCP sent me for another sleep study as she sais she was amazed they didnt do another one after the surgey to see where I stood. Well this one was better, I got a lot more information. They did wake me up at around midnight and started me on cpap. I used a full face mask. I actually felt better when I woke up. He said I was havng 8-10 incidents of apnea per hour with spo2 of 80% or below. after being put on cpap i went down to 1-2 incidents per hour. I havnt talked with my PCP after the sleep study, it has been around 10 days since the study. I was told to call if I havnt heard form her in 7-10 days. M question is what type of cpap should I get? I am so confused about all the different modles and what they do. Should I ask for a certain tpye from my PCP to put on the script? I am just lost as to where to go from here. Thanks

Ray

Hello & Welcome, Kedysh! Glad you found this forum--SO much useful info and everyone here is so willing to help!

Ditto to what Kedysh said! I started with a non-auto machine, spent more than a year with ineffective CPAP therapy because the pressure setting from my sleep study was WAY too low. Then I found this forum, got my auto, got my pressure set correctly, and have been doing great ever since. I love my M Series Auto machine, but there are other autos available as well. Good luck!

Ditto on the chat group - I've learned more here than from my PCP, Neurologist, RT, and the fresh-out business major who delivered my machine, combined.

There's plenty to learn by reading posts and using Google.

Beyond the technical stuff? Proactively manage your doctor, your sleep doctor, your neurologist, your respiratory therapist, and everything else.

Does a person ever get to the point of not needed a cpap or is sleep apnea somehting a person has for life? I just wonder if this was somethign i had say 10 years..20 years ago or is it something that started in when I started to get lazy and put on weight? I guess i am asking is this somehting that is curable..(sorry for any bad spelling ) It all jsut seems so overwhelming..all the different types of machenes...all the diferent types of readings and all that..i guess in time.
