CPAP Road Warrior Poll re Water Use

Post by SleepGuy » Sat Jan 17, 2009 10:05 am

I would very much appreciate some input about how much water CPAP travelers use on an average trip. To put the volumes in perspective, a standard soda pop can is 12 ounces. This has nothing to do with whether or not this should be distilled water--just trying to get an idea about volumes for a new product idea.

Thanks,

Bret

Seems like this would be difficult to determine without knowing the length of an "average" trip (one day versus one week) or the humidifier setting (using more water at 5 than 1 or even passover).

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your request...

I think you need to define "length of trip."

In my case, my last trip involved three nights away from home. On my humidifier (Remstar?), I use a setting of 1, and went through about 3-4 cups of water. (24-32 ounces.)

hmm on an average 3 day 2 night trip i use about a half liter of distilled with some to spare, i just reuse a nestle water bottle, that is of course with the humidifier set to 1 or 2. any higher and i would prolly need to take double that just to be on the safe side.

Wow, I'm just not sure this is something that can be generalized. Compare to the above reports that I keep my built-in HH at 1.5 and use only 1/2 cup of water per night at a pressure of 10.

Bret,
I don't fly as much as I used to but what I do is take a Propel bottle, about 16oz., with me. I figure that is enuff to get me thru until I can find distilled water locally. Just enuff to take ther stress out of travel.

Auto or land travel could be a bit different.

lol how much water fits in the m series humidifier? on setting 5 i went through the whole thing in less than a night, i went to bed at 12 and started feeling the cold dry air at about 5:30 in the am, lol. at setting 4 it uses most of the water in a typical 6-7 hour sleep cycle. haven't tried it any lower since my throat is pretty sore right now and the cooler drier air will just aggravate the crap out of it.

On overnight trips I take a 16-ounce bottle of distilled water with me regardless of the length of the trip. This will last about two nights. If I am staying longer than that I will drop into the closest grocery store and pick up a gallon of distilled water for about $0.80.

Interesting...I was wondering the answer to this question just recently....so I measured my usage last night. 7oz. That's with a setting of 2. Though I think that's the most I've used so far...but then I went to bed early last night.

So, I would need like up to 49 oz of distilled water....the longest business trips I've been on were 7 nights. I potentially plan to go on longer personal trips...someday...but that's because I dream of doing the Panama Canal by cruise ship someday....in which case I plan to take other measures to get through.

But for upcoming trips, I would need like 28oz of distilled water....

Of course, I don't know if I'll need or use a setting of 2 when I travel or use as much water. It is pretty try at home, where I don't have any other humidifier in use. (the humidistat by the computer reads 22%).

Though I've never taken one with me when I travel, so I don't know how humid or dry a typical hotel room is....though I would guess it to be dry, especially if they are running A/C.

The Dreamer.

Thanks to all those who participated in this thread and the poll. The information has been helpful in guiding decisions as I put these products together, compare my experience and opinions, test my assumptions, etc. There are many variables and I wanted to solicit experience and opinions.

I live in the desert and keep my humidifier (the integrated one on a Sandman Auto) on a setting of 8/10* and use a bit less than 6 oz/night. When I go away, it's always to somewhere less humid and I count on a 20-oz bottle (I use empty drinking-water bottles) lasting at least 4 nights. I was recently in the UK where it was extremely humid, and a 1L bottle lasted me 10 nights (100 mL = 3.38 oz/night).

ETA: I believe different mfrs' humidifiers use different amounts of water. Respironics humidifiers, for example, seem to be notorious for using a lot.

* Weirdly, my last humidifier (GoodKnight H2O) used about the same amount of water per night on a setting of 1½/6.

I use 8oz each night and my trips generally are 4 nights and occasionally 7 nights. In the summer we take off on the motorcycle and I travel lighty using motel bottled water , I plan on using your Pur-Sleep product this summer to mask the differant brands of bottled water oder . I love your product and currantly use it nightly ; just recieved my supply Sat. WE are planning a cruise this summer and I will plan on carrying distilled water if possible for that trip.

Yes, actual water use seems to be a function of ambient humidity and the heat setting. Humidity is always relative to air temperature (measured as a percentage of the air's capacity to hold water vapor at a given temperature). So, 50% humidity in the winter is much less actual water vapor in the air than 50% humidity on a summer day....

It's looking like 32 OZ would be more than enough for most people so my question is whether a container that size would be too much.

Thanks again to all--this is a very useful discussion.
