Hello All,
I am very happy there is a site for questions/support in this area.
This has already been a long road. A little history: I am overweight male, recently dx with mild OSA, instructed to lose weight, not sleep on back, and not take sedative prior to sleep and obtain a dental appliance (ins wont cover it). While this is all well and good my apnea continues, I am a snorer, my wife is getting quite concerned about my health.
What can I do? I am stuck with Kaiser med (CA). Is there anyone on this site that has been through it with them and can direct me toward a more helpful dr/support network etc?
I know that there are huge risks for Cardiovascular health in concert with my snoring and apnea. I want to live and I feel like the only recourse will be my wife suing the medical ins provider after I die from this seemingly preventable medical risk... I want to live.
My dental insurance wont cover a sleep apnea appliance as it is not preventative dental work... and it is not a dental problem...
Please help!
Thank you,
JB

Re: Insurance - Medical/Dental
Will your medical insurance cover the dental appliance? My husband has one for TMJ and it was covered by our medical (not dental) insurance.
My medical insurance here covers no treatment all unless AHI is over 15, no matter what other symptoms/associated medical problems are present (I have them ALL). I sucked it up and bought the machine myself, but I also had a very good sleep doctor who really went to bat for me and got the insurance to cover a trial APAP so he could at least write an accurate prescription. (And also showed me how to adjust the machine myself.)
If you're not feeling better, you need to go back to your doctor and demand treatment. Have you seen an actual board-certified sleep doctor or only a primary doctor?

Re: Insurance - Medical/Dental
Do you know of any reason that your doctor prescribed a dental appliance INSTEAD of a CPAP? Can you go back to the DR. and ask for a prescription for a CPAP? Your insurance should cover a CPAP.
