My Simple Solution

Post by dilligat » Tue Jan 06, 2009 1:11 am

I think I've finally sussed it!!
I have a resmed cpap with attached humidifier and the usual 6ft hose to a Resmed Hybrid mask.

I tried having the unit on the bedside cabinet but found rainout built up in the u bend between the unit and the bed as the hos hung down and the weight of the hose pulled slightly on the mask causing slight leakage as I moved around.

I then tried it with the machine on the floo by the bed about half way down the side of the bed. THis was better as the rain out ran back into the humidifier but the hose still hung down and the slight pull on the mask continued especially whane I turned to face in from the edge of the bed.

So by accident I discovered a new trick.
I stayed at a friend's place where he had a low unit at the bottom of the bed and placed the machine on this with the pipe running up the bed below the quilt to the mask.
This worked for me so with a little trial and error I have now found that by putting the machine on the ottoman (blanket chest) at the base of my bed which is an inch or so lower than my mattress. I run the pipe up the bed under the quilt.
I have a hose huggie cover and inside this along with the pipe I have run the 15watt reptile cage heater wire as described elsewhere. This works great for me.
I do not get any rain out as there is a shallow slop down from the mask to the machine so any condensation goes back into the humidifier. The whole of the pipe stays under the quilt so reducing the condensation and this is aided by the heated wire which has the added benefit of warming the hose and huggie making it nice to lie in bed with.
Furthermore being only 5'7" tall there is enough slack in the 6' hose to prevent any pulling on the mask and I've discovered that when changing posaition from sleeping on one side to the other if I rotate around the hose rather than pull the hose over me the mask stays settled and sealed all night.

Glad it's working for you. I can see that if you turn back and forth (windshield wiper) it would work well, however I tend to turn like a pig on a spit and my hose would feel like a reptile closing in for the kill!

It's going to be okay in the end; if it's not okay, it's not the end.

Yeah, I resemble that remark. I have to hang the hose or I will not sleep or I will get strangled, one of the two. I found that double insulating my hose has stopped my rainout completely. I use the resmed zipped cover, then took heavy knee socks, cut the toes out and taped them together...covered the hose with that too,and between the air insulating between the socks and the resmed cover, and the heavy knit socks, I've had absolutely no rainout even when the bedroom got to 65 degrees.

I'm goint to knit a prettier outer cover....the knee socks just look so....so....so.....

What do you use to hang your hose? Did you mount a swivel hook to the wall, or did you purchase some type of a hose holder?

Right now, I have my hose draped over the headboard. It about strangles me whenever I roll over, so I need to readjust the hose a few times each night. I've seen different contraptions to elevate the hose and allow it to move with you when you roll over, but I'm wondering what works best.

Thx,

I may be over simplistic in my approach, but I simply took a smaller nail (like one you would use to hang a picture) and put it up several feet above my head. I then took a good old shoelace I had, tied it around the hose and around the nail overhead in the wall, and I had a cheap hose support. I do have a soft hose cover over the entire length of my hose too to help with rain-out. I still have problems if I turn my humidity up too high, as I like it nice and cold in the bedroom when I sleep. Just a thought. Don't have to buy anything expensive or complex.
