Poll: Breastfed/Bottlefed and OSA - Please vote ...

Post by debtheveg » Mon Dec 15, 2008 4:45 pm

Hi Everyone,

This may seem an odd subject but let me explain. I work in the maternity section of our hospital here in Canberra and the other day I attended a 'talk' on supporting mothers to breastfeed. I didn't need convincing on that part as I breastfed my four children forever. However, the use of pacifiers (or dummies as we say in Aus) is very discouraged and I hadn't known why. The fact is, there is a very different sucking action when a baby sucks on a pacifier or bottle for feeding rather than breastfeeding.

I noticed someone has just recently written about tongue-thrusting and, of course, that's all related.

Anyway, in my insomniac state at 3am this morning I suddenly thought it might be helpful to do a survey of people on this forum who had and had not be breastfed. Maybe how long also, if known. I don't know how to set a survey up but it would be interesting to see if bottle feeding may be a factor in developing a misshaped mouth, jaw, tongue etc. and make you more prone to OSA in later life.

For the record, I was not breastfed, on the bottle before leaving hospital.

Thanks,
Deb

Do vegetarians breast feed?

Rooster,

Nothing died to create breastmilk! 100% meatfree.

But this isn't a vegetarian discussion, it's about breastfeeding as opposed to bottle-feeding. Not to make anyone feel guilty about which way they fed their babies or giving ammunition to those of us with OSA who were bottle-fed. Just curious to think there may be a relationship bottlefeeding and changing the internal shape of the mouth.

You might be on to something here, Deb.
Being a nurse and working in obstetrics for 24 years now,we know that there is definitely a difference in the way babies feed, depending on the " feeder".
I don't know how to put up a post, but I'm sure someone will tell you real soon!
I wasn't breastfed either.
D.

I was not breastfed. DH was and he has VERY mild positional OSA. I breastfed my oldest until 21mos and my youngest until 7 months, weaned her to take methotrexate, which sadly did nothing for me. But that is a whole other topic.

Hi, I was breastfed, but still ended up here, and I wonder really if the OSA might have affected the feeding, rather than the other way around.

To use the poll function click on the "edit" button on your original post. Look at the tabs at the very bottom of the page and select the "poll" tab. Instructions are listed for how to create the poll.

If you find failure to be breastfed causes osa, I am very interested to see what you recommend to male adults who already have osa.

Well, you never know Rooster ...

Do you have some unresolved issues there - maybe we can start a therapy session.

Absolutely. When do we start?

Thanks for the poll help, Rooster. By the look of that 'chicken dance' I'm presuming you were bottle-fed and somewhat traumatised by it???

Hi, Deb,

Both our son and I have sleep apnea and we were both breast fed. Our son until 10 months and not sure about myself.

The title gave me a chuckle as I immediately pictured a mom brestfeeding with the CPAP going full forces and milk shooting out several feet of both breasts! That would be one way to speed up the process.

I know it's a serious subject but some times I just can't help it. I know, I've been a "b-a-a-a-d boy" again!

Some of us wouldn't have needed a CPAP to shoot milk across the room. I also have shot both kids in the eye at more than one occasion... anyway, I'll stop now, this isn't a breastfeeding forum where people are used to such things.

I was breastfed and have had sleep apnea since my twenties if not earlier.

It has nothing to do with sleep apnea but here are two breastfeeding stories my mother told me.

1. Mom knew a lady, Addie, who breastfed the kids until they were four years old. Mind you they also started eating solid food which she supplemented with breastmilk. Grandma had a Sunday afternoon party at our farmhouse one spring day when my mom was a teenager. The kids played in the yard and the adults also wandered outside for awhile. After the party a shocked guest told mom she had seen Addie behind some bushes bending forward with her large bare breasts exposed and hanging down. The nearly four-year old son was standing on his tiptoes partaking of a midafternoon snack. My mother is a very tolerant and loving person but she loved to whisper this story throughout her life.

2. Mom went to a tea party and a young lady began breastfeeding her infant on the sofa in front of the whole group. Mom's friend, Susan, was sitting beside the mother on the sofa. Susan said, "Oh, the baby has a hair in her mouth". Susan then attempted to pull the hair from the baby's mouth. The mother yelped, "Ouch!" Needless to say Susan was mortally embarrassed and the story has lived at least fifty years.
