This dosn't make sense?

Post by bucko » Fri Dec 05, 2008 8:07 pm

I'm still trying to get my settings dialed in, without too much success. The last 2 nights I did not change any settings. The first night I got to an AHI of 5.4, VS=.7, Leak = 36.5.
The next night all I did was tape my mouth and I got an AHI of 10.1, VS= 4.3, Leak = 33.74.
Why would I do worse after taping my mouth?? How could I have more VS after taping? Plus I did feel worse and only slept 2.5 hours the second night. First night I slept 4.5 hrs.

When mouth leaks stop, your numbers become more accurate.

yep - until the leaks are under control the other numbers are rather meaningless - when you leak that is all the machine sees - it doesn't see snores - it doesn't see apneas - it just sees LEAKS

Well I guess I need a FF mask. The pillows must also be leaking during the night.

I know jules and jnk are right . . . but . . . but that's not really a big difference in your leak rate, is it? It's only something like a 7.5% drop, right? Then again, I don't know what the leak rate for the Swift is; maybe even 33.74 is too high, but it sounds great compared to my Mirage Ultra's rate. (Then again, that's dependent on pressure, too. . . .)

I wonder if it's just that you had a lot of events early on, which is what happens often to me--events right after I fall asleep, and then about 90 minutes into sleep. That doesn't explain the VS numbers, but it might explain part of the jump in AHI.

And maybe it was just a bad night, with nothing to do with the taping or leak rate. And I know I sure wouldn't feel good after just 2.5 hours of sleep.

Still, jules and jnk are right: the fewer leaks, the more accurate the numbers, and the more therapy you're getting at your pressure setting(s).

Good luck, and give taping some more time--it sure can't hurt! (Though some folks rave about their full-face masks!)

the graphs tell it all - not the numbers - agree that the leak rate might not be that different after all we can't see the graphs and don't know the pressures

but bucko has posted reports with leaks in them before - are these nights different? we don't know

what I do know is you can't compare one night with another night using numbers alone - actually you should start comparing weeks not nights to look for patterns

And nightjar is right, too. Nicely said. One night does not a trend make. Many possible explanations. Important point from jules, that, on comparing one full week to another full week with any change before making any conclusions. I think I need to buy me a box of patience to be able to do that sometimes, though.

The main thing, bucko, is that you're thinking, you're trying things, you're using the forum for suggestions, and you're seeing what helps. You will get there, no doubt!

Trouble is, whenever I buy a box of that, I discover it has sprung a leak....
